The OKâlaKatiget Society has a job opening for a Television Producer.

This position is a full time permanent position with the Society.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Identifying story ideas and conducting research
• Operating camera, lighting and audio equipment
• Planning and conducting interviews and sources
• Outlining and writing scripts for editing
• Transcribing
• Digitally editing film on Avid software

The closing date is Wednesday, September 4, 2019 and resumes should be forwarded before 4pm.

Preferences will be given to Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

Applicants are preferred to be bilingual in Inuktitut and English as well.

1st annual Tom Jararuse dart tournament

There will be a 1st Annual Tom Jararuse Dart Tournament in Hopedale on August 31st, 2019.

We contacted Hannah Winters in Hopedale.

She says there are 8 teams registered so far and are still looking for more teams if anyone is interested.

Each teams will consist of 4, 2 men and 2 women.

There will also be people from Natuashish and Goose Bay to join in this event.

Winters says she received funding from the kamatsiatet Committee for the cash prizes and a small donation from Patty Dicker.

The prizes for this tournament will consist of T-shirts and $2,000 for 1st place, $900 for 2nd place, and $400 for 3rd.

If more teams register then the cash prizes will go higher.

Winters adds that she also has 50/50 tickets to raise money for the t-shirts at the Nanuk Centre.

The fee for the tournament is $25 per player, $100 per teams and will go towards the prizes.

Nigivik Centre Land Based Program

The Nigivik Centre is looking for two more youth ages 18-30 to attend a land based program.

Shelly Dicker is the community food worker for the Nigivik Centre.

She says that they have a Boat Charter all ready for this trip with Edward Sillitt and William Ikkusek.

They will go off on the land to go berry picking, Bake Apple picking, or fishing once all the names are filled, along with 2 workers.

Depending on the weather, if they don’t go this week, next week they will look for 5 youth ages 18-30, along with 1 worker to follow.

TaKuaKautik Food Bank Accepting Food Donations

The TaKuaKautik Food Bank is accepting donations.

They accept non perishable food items such as; Dried goods (Cereal, Crackers, Rice, Pasta, etc), canned food, Baby food, Baby Formula, Cereal Bars, Tea Bags, Sugar, Flour, and more.

Brenda Jararuse is the Chair of the Food Bank for TaKuaKautik.

Gas Pump Prices Predicted This Week

Mostly calm in the fuel forecast this week as the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices predicts relative stability at the pumps.

The group says the gasoline should ease downward by about half a cent per litre, while diesel will be up by about a cent.

Heating and stove oils will also cost about a half cent more per litre.

Pauline Dicker (Audio)

Pauline Dicker is a retired Inuktitut Teacher from Jens Haven Memorial School here in Nain.

She says she started teaching Inuktitut in 1976 and retired 43 years later in 2014.

Dicker also taught life skills (Ilusivut) as well.

1st Annual Recreation Co-Ed Volley-Ball Tournament

There will be a 1st Annual Recreation Co-Ed Volley-Ball Tournament held in the community of Hopedale.

The Volley-Ball tournament will begin August 30th to the 31st, of 2019.

We spoke with the Recreation Facility Manager, Belinda Denniston.

She says there will be a fee of $50 per person, with first prize of $2000 and second prize of $1000.

It will be 3 males and 3 females, and 5 players minimum with 7 players maximum.

There is a minimum of 10 teams for the tournament to go ahead.

The deadline to apply for this Co-Ed Tournament will be on August 28, 2019.

Expression of Interest

The Nunatsiavut Government Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism is holding an OkKak 100 year Commemoration in September and are looking for the following:

• Bear guards
• Speed boat drivers
• Cooks/Cooks helper
• Cleaners
• Drivers for in town
• Billeting
• Interpreters/Translators
• Recorder/Minute taker
• Long liners

Community Group Discussion on Fisheries

There will be half-day group discussion session in Nain on the evening of August 22, starting at 5pm in the main boardroom in the NG building.

Melina Kourantidou and Megan Bailey are researchers and they will be documenting Inuit knowledge, practices and views about fisheries in Nunatsiavut (crab, shrimp, turbot, and char fisheries).

The project is a part of a larger initiative that has to do with the social, economic and cultural importance of these fisheries for Nunatsiavut. The objective is to co-develop indicators that can be used by communities and the NG in managing fisheries resources into the future.

To participate, you must be over the age of 18, and be able to speak and read English. Potential participants should note that the group discussions will be recorded.

The researchers would like to invite community members with knowledge on these fisheries to come to the meeting.

LATP Funding (Audio)

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership(LATP) has a funding of an additional CAS trading program in partnership with the College of North Atlantic in Goose-Bay, Nunatsiavut Government, and the Advanced Education Skills and Labour.

Keith Jacque is with the Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership.

This program provides academic training, and practical training such as carpentry, millwright, electrical, and welding.

They are looking for a minimum of 14 clients to attend this program and it will be for a whole year at the CONA.

It is for individuals with less than a grade 10 education.

The deadline to apply for this funding is on Friday, August 23, 2019.
