The OKâlaKatiget Society has a job opening for a Television Producer.

This position is a full time permanent position.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

• Identifying story ideas and conducting research
• Operating camera, lighting and audio equipment
• Planning and conducting interviews and sources
• Outlining and writing scripts for editing
• Transcribing
• Digitally editing film on Avid software

The closing date is tomorrow Wednesday, September 4, and resumes should be forwarded before 4pm.

Preferences will be given to Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

Applicants are preferred to be bilingual in Inuktitut and English as well.

Climate Change Adaptation Workshop

The Nunatsiavut Government Research Advisory Committee approved a 2 day workshop that is focused on being out on the land for the climate chance adaptation workshop.

Paul McCartney is the Research Manager for Nunatsiavut Government.

He says they are looking for 10 people to participate each day.

Deadline to apply is September 11, 2019.

Participants must be 15 years or older to take part.

A lunch will be provided each day and gift cards that will be given for attendances.

This workshop will be a place for researchers and community members to share their knowledge and for them to exchange ideas about how the land is changing and how is this impacting us and how are we adapting.

Come to enjoy wild food and learn more about adaptation and climate chance.

Coastal School Return to Classes

Summer break has come to an end for most students and teachers.

We contacted each of the schools on the north coast.

The Jens Haven Memorial School and the JHM Primary school will be holding the annual church service tomorrow morning

Followed by the church services the students head to their classrooms

Students in Postville in the BL Morrison School will also be heading back to their homerooms tomorrow.

Hopedale students at the Amos Comenius School are going back to school on Friday September 6, 2019.

Ceremony starts at 8:30am at the School gym for students from Kindergarten to grade 12.

Makkovik JCEM School will be heading back to their classes this Friday September 6. 2019.

The church service begins at 9am for all students in Makkovik.

Nain Clean-Up (Audio)

There will be a town and beach clean-up for the community of Nain this weekend.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director for Nain Inuit Community Government.

She says they will meet at the ball field starting at 2pm.

Ivany says there will be good prizes to be won.

1st Annual Tom Jararuse Dart Tournament in Hopedale

1st Annual Tom Jararuse Dart Tournament will be held in Hopedale on Saturday, August 31st, 2019.

Hannah Winters is the organizer for this tournament.

She says there are 8 teams registered so far and are still looking for more teams if anyone is interested.

Each teams will consist of 4, 2 men and 2 women.

There will also be people from Natuashish and Goose Bay to join in this event.

Winters says she received funding from the kamatsiatet Committee for the cash prizes and a small donation from Patty Dicker.

The prizes for this tournament will consist of T-shirts and $2,000 for 1st place, $900 for 2nd place, and $400 for 3rd.

If more teams register then the cash prizes will go higher.

Winters adds that she did a bingo fundraiser also had 50/50 tickets to raise money for the fee and t-shirts.

The fee for the tournament is $25 per player, $100 per teams and will go towards the prizes.

Winters says she is also looking for another sponsor and is still waiting to get a response back.

The deadline for registrations is tomorrow, August 30th and will go ahead with the tournament on the Saturday, the 31st.

DHSD supporting families with school bags

The Nain Department of Health and Social Development will be handing out School Bags to families who need them for that extra help before the school year.

The Nain DHSD has been doing this now for 3 years.

Supporting families who need the extra help before the school year starts.

17 boxes of school supplies were donated this year to help families in Nain.

They have 1 big box left with about 15-20 school bags in it.

So, families who need that extra help can drop by to the DHSD to get school supplies for your children.

Gas prices

No big jumps at the pumps this week.

The Public Utility Board (P.U.B) says gas will decrease by 0.5 cents per litre while diesel will drop by just 0.2 cents per litre.

Furnace and stove oil will both see a slight decrease of 0.16 cents per litre while propane will see no change.

Nain/Makkovik Fishplant updates

The Nain fish plant is slowing down for the summer.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor here in Nain.

She says there are twenty employees working at the plant.

Kohlmeister adds twenty-six thousand, two hundred sixty eight pounds of char has been landed to date and one fisherman left fishing.

In Makkovik fish plant the employees are really busy with Turbot.

Junior Andersen is the Production Manager for the plant.

He says there are 40 employees working on Turbot and four Turbot boats fishing.

Andersen adds one hundred ten thousand pounds of Turbot has been landed to date.

Siku Information Workshop session in Nain

The Arctic Eider Society from Sanikiluak, Nunavut is in town to hold an information workshop session this evening in Nain.

Joel Heath is one of the members from the Eider Society.

The Arctic Eider Society is a registered Canadian charity; they work with Inuit and Cree Community in Hudson Bay to address environmental change affecting sea ice ecosystems through research, education and outreach.

A workshop is being held for the public tonight at 7pm at the Nunatsiavut Government building.
