Full-Time Radio Producer Job Ad

The OKâlaKatiget Society has a job opening for a Radio Producer.

Under the supervision of the Senior Producer, the Radio Producer prepares new and current affairs items for daily broadcast on the Society’s radio network.

The deadline for this position is tomorrow, October 29th, 2019 at 4:30 pm and preferences will be given to Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

Records Check, and a Vulnerable Sector Screening that is acceptable to the OKâlaKatiget Society.

Coastal DHSD’s Halloween Activities

The OK Society has contacted the coastal DHSD’s to see what they are preparing for their Halloween activities.

Jane Merkuratsuk is the Community Health Worker here with the Nain DHSD.

She says they will be holding a Ghost Story Telling for ages 16 and up starting at 6 pm tonight at the DHSD Multi-purpose Room.

They will also be taking names until 4 pm for the Window Decorating on the 30th and will be judging at 6 pm with prizes to be won.

The prizes for 1st place will be a $100 gift card from Northern, $75 for 2nd place, and $50 for 3rd.

In Hopedale, we spoke with Juliana Winters who is the Community Health Worker.

She says they will have a Diabetes Bingo along with a Halloween Party this evening for senior’s ages 50 years and up from 5-7 pm, and for ages 18-49 from 7-9 pm at the katingavik.

In Rigolet, we spoke with Pam Campbell who is the Mental Health and Addictions Worker.

She says they will have a Family Pumpkin Carving tonight at 6:30 pm at the Community Hall in partnership with the RCMP.

In Makkovik, there will be a Family Pumpkin Carving tonight at the DHSD from 6-8 pm.

The OK Society will have more of the Halloween activities tomorrow.

Rigolet Community Shed Update

OK Radio also contacted the Rigolet Community Shed to see what is planned for this month.

Waylon Shiwak is the worker for the community shed in Rigolet.

He says that the projects are doing well and people been enjoying themselves.

Shiwak said that they’ve built lots of furniture like dressers, benches, chairs, shelves and stairs, also some hall trees and a bunk bed.

He says that four people been showing up for the projects.

They will have some workshops planned for wood carvings.

For Halloween, they are building a flat today, tomorrow and Wednesday. They will draw names using a hat and the winner will keep the flat.

Hopedale Community Shed Update

OK radio contacted the Hopedale community Shed to see what they have planned for this month.

William Dicker is the worker for projects with the community shed in Hopedale.

He says that people comes in everyday and enjoys what they’re doing.

Dicker says that they’ve built a flat boat and shelves.

Right now, the Hopedale community shed is building Kamutiks and doing some minor fixes on their Ski-doos, bikes and trucks.

Tomorrow, they will be making boot dryers that go above the stove.

They will be going out on the land to gather some parts on building two kayaks and will make push boxes.

Makkovik Fish Plant Update

The Makkovik fish plant is still busy with crab.

Junior Andersen is the Production Manager for the plant.

He says there are twenty two employees working on the crab.

Andersen says the crab boat landed 11,000 pounds of crab last evening.

To this date 477,430 pounds of crab has been landed.

Andersen says the employees will start cleaning up the fish plant tomorrow.

And the fish plant will close for the season end of this week.

Nomination Call for 2019 Inuit Woman of the Year Award (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government Status of Women office will be honoring a Labrador Inuit Woman of the Year.

Tracy Anne Evans is the Nunatsiavut Status of Women Coordinator.

She says there are no set criteria for this award; it is open for anyone to nominate a Labrador Inuit woman who they feel deserves to be recognized as Inuit Woman of the Year 2019.

Evans adds that the deadline is November 29th, 2019.

NG Travels to Montreal (Audio)

Some members from Nunatsiavut recently travelled to Montreal for The Inuit Studies Conference.

Brenda Jararuse is the Director for the Cultural with the Nunatsiavut government.

She says there were number of Nunatsiavut members that went to the conference from different Nunatsiavut communities.

Jararuse adds that who attended the conference were Inuit speakers and people who are involved with the schools.

OK’s 37th Anniversary Program Airing This Week

Tomorrow, Friday October 25th, 2019, marks the 37th Anniversary for the OKâlaKatiget Society.

OKâlaKatiget Radio will be airing a special 37th Anniversary show.

There will be quizzes throughout the day for our listeners.

Names with correct answers will be entered in a draw for OKâlaKatiget T-shirts.

Nain Recreation Halloween Activities

The Nain Recreation Department is busy with the Halloween activities at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre this year.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director for the Nain Inuit Community Government.

She says there will be another movie night tonight; October 24th, 2019 for children ages 5-7 starting from 6:30-8 pm.

They will be watching Hotel Transylvania 3 and will be held at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.
