TaKuaKautik Giveaway

There will be a Food Bank Giveaway this evening, Wednesday, October 30th, 2019.

This month, the TaKuaKautik will be open for food distribution a day earlier than usual, due to Halloween.

The TaKuaKautik Food Bank is run completely by volunteers and due to the amount of work put into the food bank, this is what they are able to provide for the community until further notice.

The community is reminded to call into the toll free number 709-700-4739 to place an order by the next giveaway.

And intake forms can be picked up at the Clinic, Nunatsiavut Government building, Family Connections Staff, and the Nigivik Centre.

They would also like to remind the community that the TaKuaKautik will be handing out food on the one day a month that is designated and advertised.

If people miss this date, you will have to wait until the next month to pick up food.

Nain Halloween Dance

The Halloween Dance up the Jeremias Silliett Building was a good turnout last night, a lot of people showed up.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director here in Nain Recreation Department.

There was a costume judging contest, it was for the ages:
0-4 years
5-7 years
8-12 years
13-15 years
16+ years

They won money prizes, first prize with $50, second prize with $25 and third prize of $15.

The Judges chosen were all from out of town.

Ivany says that there were door prizes draws; there were prizes of $100, $75, $50, $25 and an iPad mini.

There was the sucker pull, it was $1 for a sucker, prizes were a Bose speaker, $40, apple charger 2 $25.

There was a cake decorating contest, Pauline Dicker won 1st place with $75, Alexa Chaulk won 2nd place with $50 and Jonathon Christensen won $25.

There were more games, Giselle Obed won a connect 4 game from the Elimination, Silpa Lidd won Cat ears headphones from the spot dance and Andrew Chaulk won on numbers game and got a monopoly game. And they all got a Halloween bag.

Coastal DHSD Halloween Activities

The OKâlaKatiget contacted the coastal communities for the Halloween activities with DHSD.

Jane Merkuratsuk is the Community Health Worker here with the Nain DHSD.

She says they will be taking names for the Window Decorating tonight and are taken names until 4 pm and followed by judging at 6 pm with prizes to be won.

The prizes for 1st place will be a $100 gift card from Northern, $75 for 2nd place, and $50 for 3rd.

In Hopedale, we spoke with Juliana Winters who is the Community Health Worker.

She says they will have a Halloween party for children ages 6-12 from 6-8 pm at DHSD in the Aboriginal Head Start room.

And the Makkovik DHSD will be holding a Zombie Chase at 6 pm and will be meeting by the DHSD building.

Gas and Other Fuels Predicted to Increase This Week

It looks like there will be another increase in fuel prices across the board this week.

George Murphy of the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices says gas is set to go up by 1.5 cents per litre.

The price of diesel and heating and stove oils will also increase, but only marginally at less than one cent.

Piercy Talks About Halloween in Hopedale (Audio)

Halloween is tomorrow and it is good to a hear story from an elder.

Andrew Piercy is and Elder and was relocated in 1959 from Hebron.

He says he did not know about Halloween until he moved to Hopedale in 1959.

Piercy says people in his community decorates for Halloween and seems like it is Christmas time.

The OKâlaKatiget Society has a job opening for a Radio Producer.

Under the supervision of the Senior Producer, the Radio Producer prepares new and current affairs items for daily broadcast on the Society’s radio network.

Regionals Volleyball Tournament

The Nain Jens Haven Memorial School Huskies will be going to the Regional Volleyball tournament.

Julie Dicker is the coach for the JHMS Huskies.

She says it will take place in Sheshatshiu at the School.

The volleyball regionals will be November 15th till November 16th, 2019.

She says the usual teams that attend from Labrador are:
-JHMS Huskies
-Goose Bay, Mealy Mountain Collegiate
-Sheshatshiu
-Labrador City, Menihek High School

Dicker adds that the team who wins the regionals will go to the provincials that will take place in Newfoundland.

SMARTICE Open House

The SMARTICE program at the Nain Northern Production Centre began their Open House this morning from 11 am and will finish at 2 pm this afternoon.

They are inviting everyone in the community to join them during their open house event.

Come and enjoy some refreshments and learn more about the Smart Buoy production process and the Employment Readiness Program.

The Northern Production Center is located at 2 Morhardt Road, in the old LIDC building, down stairs.

Their recent graduates from the Employment Readiness and Technology Development Program are ready to meet and greet with you.

Come by to learn more about what SmartICE Northern Production Center do on a daily basis.

They will be looking for more youth to participate in this program in the New Year.

Nain Youth Center Haunted House

The Nain Youth Center will be holding their annual Haunted House event tomorrow evening.

Kim Oliver is the Team Leader for the Nain Youth Center.

She says volunteers and staff will be holding their annual Haunted House event from 8:30 pm until 10 pm.

Donations will be accepted at the door, and this year the donations will be given to the Nain Care.

Last year donations were given to the Nain Moravian Church.

Oliver says everyone is welcome, and be prepared to be scared.

Children under the age of 13 years will need to be accompanied by an adult.

This year the entrance will be through the basement door in the back.

She adds they have a lot of volunteers this year to help with the decorating and dedication.

Oliver would like to say thank you to all the volunteers for their hard work and to the staff members.

Medication Dispensing at the Nain Community Clinic (Audio)

There will be changes to the medication dispensing in the Nain Community Clinic; which will be in effect on Monday, November 4, 2019.

Dr. Gabe Wollam is the Family Physician in Happy Valley Goose Bay and the Vice President of Medical Services for Labrador.

He says the Nain Community Clinic will no longer be dispensing long-term prescriptions as of November 1, 2019.

And this new regulation came into effect for the community of Hopedale; on August 1, 2019.

This change in medication dispensing services will be implemented at other community clinics in the future.

Labrador-Grenfell Health will continue to have a small supply of medications in case they are required by clients on short notice.

The clinic will continue to provide acute-care medications.

Nursing staff at the Nain Community Clinic will be available to answer questions and provide support during this change.
