Ugly Sweater Party Results

The Nain Recreation Department held their annual Ugly Sweater Party here in Nain this past Sunday evening.

The party was held on Sunday, December 8th, 2019 at the Jeremias Community Centre.

OK Radio had one of our co-workers participate in this event.

She says about 40 people were there who attended and about 15 participants took part in the Ugly Sweater contest.

And we have the results for the winners for this year:

1st place winner went to Jessie Lidd who won herself $300 and the second place winner went to Liz Pijogge and she won herself $200 dollars and Miriam Lidd came in third place and won herself $100.

The Recreation Department held some games during the party.

Games played were: Musical Chairs, Spot Dance, Pass the Parcel, Balloon Bust, a number game, and an Elimination Dance.

Snacks and door prizes were also distributed, and the winners were:

Rose Marie Ford who won herself a $100 bingo card, and Shirley Jararuse won the iPod Touch 128 GB.

Provincials Results

The Jens Haven Memorial Huskies just competed in the Provincials this past weekend in Gander Newfoundland.

Our Huskies are coming home with Second place with a silver and bronze.

Julie Dicker is the coach for the Huskies.

She says 8 girls and 8 boys traveled to the Provincials to compete.

There were four chaperones that traveled with the Huskies and with the coach; Wilson Michelin, Darlene Holwell and Kristie Holwell.

The Provincials took place at the Academy School and the Collegiate School.

One group has returned home this morning from the Provincials while the other half of the students will be returning tomorrow.

The Husky girls received the Most-Sportsmanlike Team in the 3A division and the Husky Boys received silver in the 3A division.

So, don’t forget to congratulate the huskies when they return home.

North Coast Ball Hockey Tournament

The Makkovik Recreation Department will be hosting a Ball Hockey Tournament for residents on the north coast of Labrador in the New Year.

Paul Andersen is the Recreation Director.

He says this will be a non-cash prize tournament.

The teams will consist of three-on-three and a goalie for the Men’s and Women’s Division.

He adds that the registration fee for each team is $100 registration fee.

The ages for men are 14 years and up, and for the women teams are 12 years and up.

The tournament will be held on January 24th, 2020 until January 25th, 2020 at the J.C Erhardt Memorial School gym at 3 pm.

Andersen says all players from each team are required to wear the same colour uniforms with numbers.

The deadline for registration is January 17th, 2020.

LATP Camp Attendant Training

The Labrador Aboriginal Training Partnership will be offering the Camp Attendant training in Hopedale in the New Year.

Ocean Lane is the LATP Career Counsellor for the North Coast and her office is located in Makkovik.

She says the Camp Attendant training will take place in Hopedale on January 26th, 2020 and will end on February 6th, 2020.

To apply for this 11 day program, you must fill out the application form.

They have 12 seats available for anyone who would like to complete this program.

Lane says although the seating is limited in Hopedale, they may also be offering this training in other communities in the near future if there is a big interest.

Retirement for John Andersen (Audio)

One of the Recreation Directors on the north coast will be retiring next month.

John Andersen will be retiring his position as the Recreation Director in the New Year.

He has been serving his community of Makkovik for the past 25 years.

Andersen started his position as Recreation Director for the Makkovik Recreation Department; he began his position since 1996.

Andersen adds he has no plans but he would like to go wooding, hunting and fishing while he is retired.

Hopedale Safe House

The Selma Onalik Safe House in Hopedale will be offering hair appointments for their residents in the New Year.

All services are free of charge for women and children.

They are taking appointments now until December 19th, 2019.

Services being offered will include: haircuts, highlighting/colouring, ear piercing, and waxing.

They are holding the Hair appointments from January 20th – 24th, 2020.

And they are also taking appointments for men’s hair cuts for $25 per cut.

And Women & children’s services will be held at the Safe House, and the men’s cuts will be held at the Manse.

Moose Meat (Audio)

The Moose Meat that was harvested on the Island in Gros Mourne and will be distributed to the north coast communities next week.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources for the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says the moose meat is in Goose Bay now at the cold storage.

Broomfield adds they will ship the moose meat to the north coast communities next week on Air Borealis.

Nain Recreation Christmas Activities

The Nain Recreation Department is busy planning Christmas events for the community.

On Saturday, December 7th, there will be a Merchandise Bingo and Christmas Dinner for Seniors 65 and up.

This will be taking place at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre at 12 noon.

On Sunday, December 8th starting at 7 pm, there will be an Ugly Sweater Party for ages 16 and up.

The prizes awarded for the ugliest sweaters for 1st place is $300, 2nd place $200, and 3rd $100.

There will also be a chance to win a free $100 Bingo card and/or a 128 GB iPod.

A Giant Christmas Bingo on Station 90.1 will be held on Saturday, December 14th and cards will be on sale for $100 from 9 am-3 pm at the Nain Husky Centre.

Games will consist of $200 games, $1000 Mini Jackpot, 50/50 tickets, $5000 jackpot, and Game 11 will be a pick your own and winner gets 75% of the profit.

New Programs For The Month

The Youth Centre has some new programs set up for this month.

Kim Oliver is the Youth Outreach Worker in Nain.

She says tomorrow, December 7th, there will be cookie baking for ages 13-30.

Once they are done, they will pass out to elders around town.

They will also be live streaming the husky games on the big TV from 2-5 pm and will have three spots available.

On December 19th, there will be Grinchy Games from 3-5 pm.

The games haven’t been planned but expect it to be silly and fun.

Santa on Air on OK Radio

Santa Claus will once again be on OKalaKatiget Society Radio on Wednesday, December 18th, 2019, and it will be from 2 to 4 pm.

Children 12 years and under will be able to call Santa.

Children in town who wish to talk to Santa with their Wish List can call our station at 709-922-2955.

Out of Town Children can also call on our toll free number at 1-855-922-2955.

Santa and his Elves are very busy at this time of the year, so, children get your Wish List ready to tell Santa what you want for Christmas.

Just a reminder to parents or guardians: children are asked to keep it short as possible, so that other children get a chance to talk to Santa.
