November Year End Review 2019

Here are the November year end reviews from 2019.

On November 1st, 2019, the Nain Youth Center held their first Halloween Haunted House and they raised monies towards the Nain Moravian Church and raised $53 dollars in total.

On November 5th, the community of Nain ran out of gas at the Woodward’s Oil ltd gas station.

Then on Saturday, November 6th, residents in Hopedale also ran out of gas at their local gas station.

Also on November 5th, all across Canada, Guy Fawkes night was celebrated.

The Illusuak Community Centre in Nain was finally completed on November 5th.

On November 7th, The DHSD in Nain hired on a new Youth Outreach Worker for Nain, Kim Oliver was hired on.

Nov 8th, The Torngat Regional Housing Association held their annual board meeting in Happy Valley-Goose Bay; they held their re-elections for the new Chair person and vice chair.

Judy Dicker from Hopedale was elected for Chair person this year and Margie Fox from Nain is the new Vice Chair person.

November 8th, Hopedale celebrated their annual Jobe J Volley Ball Tournament and it was their 24th annual.

On November 13th, The Creative Arts Festival held its 44th annual Festival.

Nov 18th, the Nunatsiavut Government, partnered with Tradition and Transition with the new app titled “Inuttitut Kautamât UKauset, Inuttitut Everyday Words” is available on the app store or the Google Play.

The Jens Haven Memorial Huskies won Gold in the 3A/4A Volleyball Regionals both Male and Female Divisions.

Nov 19th, the Nunatsiavut Assembly held their sitting in Hopedale.

The official grand opening of the Illusuak was held on November 19th.

On November 22nd the 2nd Annual Gussie Bennett Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament was held.

October Briefs

Here is the review for October 2019:

The Nunatsiavut Government’s Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism was renamed Language, Culture and Tourism on October 2nd, 2019.

“Nunatsiavut Stories” website from the Nunatsiavut Government here in Nain was created on October 7th.

The first Alumni Sports meet took place in Nain on October 10th until October 14th, 2019

“Inuttut Kautamât uKauset” app was created by Tradition & Transition, a partnership between Memorial University of Newfoundland and the Nunatsiavut Government and was conducted by Alana Johns from the University of Toronto and Rita Andersen from Nain on October 9th, 2019.

Vale held an information session to provide information on their employment programs, including the Job Readiness Training Program (JRTP) and the Underground (UG) Miner Trainee Program on October 16th to October 17th.

The Polar Knowledge Canada from the Canadian High Arctic research station from Cambridge Bay Nunavut held an information session in Nain on October 17th.

On October 21st, the polling stations for the Federal elections opened.

Yvonne Jones was re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Labrador on October 22nd.

The Eastern Canada Seabirds at Sea Program (ECSAS) started training on October 23rd, 2019.

Some members from Nunatsiavut traveled to Montreal for The Inuit Studies Conference on October 23rd, 2019.

On Friday, October 25th, 2019, OK Radio celebrated their 37th Anniversary and OK Radio held a special show.

August year end review

Here are the August year end moments from 2019.

Effective August 1st, 2019, the Hopedale Community Clinic no longer dispensed medication.

On August 9th marked the 29th Annual Trout Festival in Makkovik Trout Festival Day.

On August 9, after 6 long days of no internet and long distance for Nain and Natuashish, it was finally restored that evening.

On Saturday, August 23rd, Nain had its first Music Festival.

Performances were local performers, and other musicians who came to Nain to perform such as Saali Keelan, The Flummies Band, and Nain Brass Band

Aug 31st marked the first Annual Tom Jararuse Dart Tournament in Hopedale.

On August 28th the Labrador Friendship Center held a Back to school program for families for the past 12 years, from the “Back to School Program”.

The 1st Annual Recreation Co-Ed Volley-Ball Tournament was held in Hopedale on August 30th to 31st, 2019.

July Moments for Year end review

Here are the July moments from 2019.

Beginning of July 2019 the Labrador-Grenfell Health announced about their will be enhanced air transportation, an aircraft for Schedevac and Medivac dedicated aircraft for medical emergencies.

On July 9th, Nain residents first received cellular services with Bell Aliant.

The DHSD in Nain completed an 8 week Parenting Program, with 15 participants graduated on Tuesday, July 9th, 2019.

On July 10th, The Division of Tourism with Nunatsiavut Government were looking for speed boat charters to travel from Nain to Hebron for the summer.

Also on July 10th the new ferry vessel first hit the Labrador seas for the north coast of Labrador called the Kamutik W began serving the freight and passengers and vehicles freight to the north coast communities today.

On July 11th, the Nunatsiavut Government had a few people from the North West Territories come to Labrador to teach elders and youth how to clean moose hide.

On July 12th the construction for the seven-Plex has started here in Nain.

The 14th Annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale started Monday, July 15th and ran until Saturday, July 20th.

July 14th marked the 14th Annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale.

This year marked the 29th year for the Annual Trout Festival in Makkovik.

The 19th annual Fun in the Sun Festival started in Postville on Tuesday, July 23rd.

July 27th the Beach Festival began in North West River.

On July 30th, a new vessel was built to serve the Torngat Fish Producers Incorporated for the community of Nain.

May and June Review

Here is the Year end review for the months of May 2019 and June 2019:

The 10th Annual CYN and Mr. Volleyball Tournament were held in Nain May 3rd, 2019.

The Advanced polling stations opened on May 9th, 2019, for the MHA for the Torngat Mountains.

May 16th, the Election Day for the MHA for the Torngat Mountain District has been appointed to Lela Evans.

Dr. Jim Tuck was remembered for archaeological research in Nunatsiavut on May 10th.

Patty Dicker became the new owner for Big Land General Stores, which been renamed into Franks General Store on May 21st.

New Rates for the recent ferry Kamutik W have been posted on May 23rd.

The Lab Cup celebrated their 37th annual tournament on May 29rd.

On June 3rd, 2019, by the Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe upon the release of “Reclaiming Power and Place”, the report on the first National Inquiry into Missing Murdered Indigenous Woman and Girls in Canada.

Inuit Students graduates of the first-ever Inuit Bachelor of Education program on June 4th.

A contract has been made to design a new six-bed mental health unit at the Labrador Health Center in Happy Valley Goose Bay from MP Yvonne Jones on June 13th.

On June 13th, 2019, the creation of a Community Based Teacher Education program from The Labrador Institute and the Faculty of Education of Memorial University.

We spoke with Joe Dicker, the AngajukKâk for the Nain Inuit Community Government on some updates at the town office on June 14th.

A few things like the housing development, replacing waterlines, maintaining the roads, etc. are being worked on during that time.

Also on June 14th, the coastal Department of Health and Social Development offices had activities planned for Father’s Day.

Nunatsiavut communities began preparing events for National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 18th.

Grade 4-12 Christmas Concert (Audio)

The Jens Haven Memorial School held their annual Grades 4 to 12 Christmas concert on December 18th, 2019.

One of our Radio Producers was there to record the event.

All students did a wonderful job in performing.

New Years Eve Dance

The Nain Recreation Department will be holding its annual New Year’s Eve Dance tonight.

Starting tonight they will be celebrating the New Years Dance starting at 7 pm until 10:30 pm at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Center.

During the dance they will be holding door prize of a Bose Speaker, Cash prizes of $100 dollars, $50 dollars and $25 dollars.

The draws will take place at 9:30 pm.

Recreation will be giving out Top hats, Tiaras, Caps, Horns, Noise Makers, Leis, and glow supplies to the first 100 people.

And fireworks to follow at 12 midnight.

Wolverine Shield Volleyball Tournament Results

A volleyball tournament was held in Makkovik this past weekend and was a good turnout.

Paul Andersen is the Recreation Director for Makkovik.

It was held at the J.C. Erhardt Memorial School Gym from December 27th until December 29th 2019.

Here are the results of the tournament:
First place for the men division was the RPP_Lovers and the women’s division were the We Get It Up.
Second place in the men’s division are the Torngat Housing Warriors and Attack pack in the Women’s division
Third place are the Jesse’s Panitsiaks in the men’s division and Ball Bangers for the women’s division.

Jessica Winters was the Women’s Most Valuable Player and Jordan Broomfield was the Men’s MVP.

Samuel Dicker was the Most-Sportsmanlike Player in the Men’s Division and Josie McNeil was the MSP for the women’s division.

April Review

Torngat Fish Producers Cooperative and the board members held their meeting in Goose Bay last week of March. The meeting went well, with agenda items that included the fishery of crab, turbot, char and plans for scallop and whelk survey.

The Annual HOPE Walk went ahead in Hopedale with 17 participants with two guides to the Healing Lodge on March 25th.

Immapivut project held a Face book photo contest from April 1st to the 15th.

Tradition and Transition in partnership with Nunatsiavut Government and Memorial University held an Embroidery work project from the 1940-1970’s. The meetings sessions were held in Goose Bay, Makkovik, Hopedale and Nain.

The Elders conference took place in Nain on April 8th; elders were invited from the north coast communities and kuujuaq.

The 39th annual Heritage Dogteam race went ahead on March 30th in Makkovik.

Land and Sea TV Crew came to Nain to do a documentary about the Webb Family.

Ethel Pijogge Memorial Festival was held on April 10th–13th in Hopedale.

Air Inuit Easter flights from kangiqsualujjuaq to Nain went ahead from April 18th, and April 23rd and back.

An enhanced Schedevac and Medevac Service was announced on Facebook Post on April 16th by MHA Randy Edmunds.

The Labrador Inuit Youth Symposium was held in Hopedale on April 24th to 29th.

The Flummies came to Nain and performed on April 25th and 27th, this year marked the Bands 41st being together.

Year End Review for March 2019

Here are the Year End review stories for the month of March 2019.

The 17th Annual Bernard and Jeffery Memorial hockey was held on March 1st, 2019.

On Sunday, March 3rd, the Happy Valley-Goose Bay mini mall was engulfed in flames.

On March 5th, the Nunatsiavut Assembly voted to remove the Ordinary member for Hopedale, Rachel Saunders from office for refusing to adhere to penalties imposed on her for several breaches of the Nunatsiavut Code of Conduct Act.

The Nunatsiavut Government released the 2019-2020 budget on March 6th, during the sitting at the Nunatsiavut House of Assembly in Hopedale.

Of the $112 million, $450,000 budgeted for 2019-2020 fiscal year, which begins April 1st, a total of $58 million is received under the Fiscal Financing Agreement (FFA) which negotiated between the Nunatsiavut Government and the governments of Canada and Newfoundland and Labrador.

On March 7th, 2019, the very first annual Illuvigak building workshops was held in Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville and Rigolet this year.

And the 14th Annual Carl Sheppard Memorial Ball Hockey tournament was held in Postville on March 8th and 9th, 2019.

Staff from the Environment climate change Canadian wildlife service’s held Caribou meetings on the north coast communities started from March 11th.

They held Caribou Consultation Meetings in Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Rigolet Postville, North West River, Sheshatshiu and Natuashish.

On March 8th the Tradition and Transition were in Partnership with the Nunatsiavut Government and Memorial University would like to get community input about their research on the Survivors of the Okak Flu of 1918 and 1919.

They hired on Patty Way who is the Genealogist Researcher who has gathered information about the Okak Family Tree.

Her research is about survivors, who they are, or what became of them, and information about the descendants of the survivors today.

She says there were only 59 survivors of the Okak Spanish Flu.

And out of the 59 survivors, 19 were male and 40 were female.

March 7th marked the fourth annual Nain Wing Bee.

Regina Wells is the Environmental Protection Officer with Environmental Services Based in HVGB and Carla Pamak the Inuit Research Advisory with Nunatsiavut Government.

They held an open house, and this Wing Bee was a way to help gather data on Migratory birds that are harvested in Nunatsiavut.

The 26th Annual Makkovik Jamboree was held on Friday, March 15th.

There were performers such as John Mitchell, Bud Mitchell, Cathy Lane, Brandon Pardy, Sam and Joan Dicker and other singers from Makkovik as well.

On March 7th, the legendary singer-songwriter Charlie Panigoniak passed away.

The minimum wage increased in Newfoundland and Labrador on April 1st, 2019, to $11.40 an hour.

On March 19th, the Tourism Nunatsiavut hosted a photo exhibition to showcase photographs done by Inuit during the Nunatsiavut Artistry.

This is a great way to showcase their photos, and the photographers will be Rita Ann Dicker from Nain, Samantha Jacque from Makkovik, Ryan Winters from Hopedale, Holly Andersen from Makkovik, Jillian Larkham from Makkovik and Inez Shiwak from Rigolet.

The Nunatsiavut Government Interpreter/Translator team hosted an Inuktitut Terminology Workshop in Nain, from March 19th-21st, 2019.

On March 30th the 39th Annual Heritage Dog team race held in Makkovik.

Five teams registered from Makkovik and Hopedale.
