Girls on Ice Expedition 2020

There will be Girls on Ice Expedition from July 30th to August 10th, 2020.

Girls on Ice Canada are a tuition free, 12 day wilderness science education program for high school girls aged 16 and 17.

Each year, they select expedition teams of 8-9 girls and 3 instructors to spend 12 days exploring and learning about a remote wilderness environment.

They will be mountaineering and hiking in the Asulkan Valley in Glacier National Park in British Columbia.

The 2020 Application for expeditions in the United States and Canada is open and ends on January 31st, 2020.

Nain Husky Centre Schedule

The 2020 Winter Activities at Nain Husky Centre starts today, Wednesday, January 8th, 2020.

3:30 pm will be for Novice.

4:30 pm will be Female vs. Atoms n Peewees

There will be General Skating for all at 5:30 pm.

At 7 pm will be Bantam n Midgets.

And at 8:30 pm will be Men’s Hockey.

The schedules can be picked up at the Nain Husky Centre or call for more information.

Enhancement Employment Program Update

OK Radio contacted each of the Inuit Community Governments along the coast to get what’s going on for the Enhancement Employment Programs.

Shirley Goudie is the supervisor for the program with the Postville ICG.

Goudie says the projects are doing well.

There have been three people in total. Two people are done and one is still making their hours.

They have been doing traditional crafts, sewing crafts and woodwork around town.

Donna Flowers is the supervisor for the Enhancement program in Hopedale.

Flowers say that they are still waiting for approvals for funds to get people to get their hours.

Barry Andersen is the AngajukKak for the Makkovik ICG.

Andersen says the projects are going smooth.

There were seven people who participated. 5 people have done their hours. One will be done this afternoon and one will still be doing the hours.

They have been shoveling snow around town, doing some crafts and fixing up at the graveyard.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKak for the Nain ICG.

Dicker says the projects are doing well.

They had enough funds for a total of 9 people. Seven people have done their hours, one will be done this Friday and one will be done sometime in February.

Next, they’ll be helping with the Arena. They’ll be working on the zamboni and work around the arena to get it ready for the winter.

Polar Bear Licence Applications

Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement are advised that the 2020 Polar licences for the Labrador Inuit Settlement Area will be issued under a draw system.

Beneficiaries who are interested to have their name entered into the draw must present themselves at the Nunatsiavut Government office in their Community within the Labrador Inuit settlement Area and fill out the applicable form.

The application form must be filled out and submitted to your local Conservation Officer by 12 noon on January 31st for your name to be entered into the draw. The 2020 hunting season will open on February 3rd.

Moose Hunt and Polar Bear Licences (Audio)

The moose hunt is still on-going in each of the Nunatsiavut communities.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources with the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says they had 39 moose licences and 8 have been harvested so far in the communities of Nain and Makkovik.

Broomfield says they still have 31 moose licences available yet.

And regarding the polar bear licences, they are available now for the Nunatsiavut beneficiaries as well.

He says the applications must be filled out and submitted to your local Conservation Officer by 12 noon on January 31st for your name to be entered into the draw.

Broomfield adds the hunting season will open on February 3rd, 2020.

Coastal Community Freezers

OKâlaKatiget Society contacted each of the coastal communities to see what they offer in their community freezers.

This is what they have to offer:

In Nain they have moose meat, char and seal meat.

In Hopedale they have moose, char, cod, sugar, tea, milk and soups.

Moose char and cod fish in the Postville freezer.

Makkovik has char to offer in their freezer.

And in the Rigolet community freezer they have moose, char, bake apples, red berries, cod, cod heads and scallops.

IlinniaKatigennik Show

The IlliniaKatigennik show was scheduled to start on January 14th, 2020, but it will be back on January 21st, 2020, due to shortage of staff.

So, the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism is looking for Inuktitut speakers that are willing to tell some stories, memories or Inuktitut songs.

The recordings will be used for the IlliniaKatigennik radio show that is aired on the OKâlaKatiget Society.

Part 2 of Christmas Concert (Audio)

On December 18th, 2019 the Jens Haven Memorial School students from grades 4-12 held their Christmas concert that day and evening.

We aired the part 1 yesterday and today we will air the part 2 of the Christmas concert.

Students did a wonderful performance.

Nalujuk Night in HVGB

Nalujuit night is Monday night and some Nunatsiavut communities celebrate this special occasion.

Kelly Jacobs is the Community Health Worker for DHSD in Happy Valley Goose Bay.

She says they will get together on January 6th at 14 Corte Real Road.

Jacobs says the nalujuk will give out candy bags to the children and will have some door prizes as well.

Tune into Sundays program on January 5th to hear what the Nalujuit will be doing in HVGB.

Nain Nalujuit Night

January 6 is Old Christmas, which is fast approaching.

As you all know, the Nain CARE committee has always put off a great show for the community and especially the children.

In saying that, let’s help them with the little treats that are given out to all the little children at the evening event.

They are accepting candy, apples or oranges, juice boxes and little bags of chips. Every donation counts.
