Polar Bear Licenses update

The Polar Bear hunting season opened on February 2nd, 2020.

We spoke with Todd Broomfield the Director of Renewable Resources with the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says there are a total of 12 licenses to be filled on the north coast and 5 of them has been harvested.

Broomfield says 5 licenses are now filled from Nain and 2 remaining licenses to fill in Hopedale with one polar bear being harvested.

No polar bears were harvested in Postville yet but have 2 licenses to fill.

He adds 1 license was filled in Makkovik and they have 1 remaining license to fill, and in Rigolet, there are still 2 licenses to be filled.

Right now, there are 7 licenses left to harvest and 5 licenses are now filled.

Broomfield adds that the hunting seasons will remain open until all 12 licenses are filled, and the harvesting season is open until June 30th, 2020.

Married Couples Day in Nain

Today is Married Couples Traditional Day in Nain.

This Day is held on February 28 and has been a Tradition through many years.

The church services are held for the married couples at 10 am, 3pm lovefeast, and 5pm closing service.

The Nain Choir take part at 3 and 5pm and sing hymns and some of the traditional choir scripts for the day.

The next Traditional Festival Day to watch for is next Friday, March 6 for Young Women’s Day.

Seeking Nomination Committee

The Language, Culture & Tourism are seeking one member from each of the five Nunatsiavut Communities, Upper Lake Melville, and Canadian Constituency to sit on a Nomination Committee for the Inuttitut and Cultural Preservation Awards.

To be able to sit on the committee, the individuals must be Nunatsiavut Beneficiary, have a great knowledge of Inuttitut, Inuit culture, and the Nunatsiavut communities

The deadline to apply is March 12th, 2020 at 4 pm.

Nain Rec Dept. Update

The Nain Inuit Community Government Recreation Department announced the ticket draw a week ago today for the 2019 Skandic WT 900 Ace snowmobile.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director.

She says the draw was held at the JS Center on February 20th, 2020.

They sold a total of 1,444 tickets on the snowmobile and the lucky ticket winner was Amber Kohlmeister.

Congratulations to Amber Kohlmeister who now owns a brand new 2019 Skandic WT 900 Ace.

Ivany adds they are still selling tickets on the 2019 Foot Shift Honda 420.

The Recreation Dept. printed 1,500 tickets and is selling for $15 each.

The Honda draw date is set for July 1st, 2020.

They are also accepting cash only at the NICG office and pay by debit at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

Ivany says the dates for the Recreation Bingo’s are on Thursday and Saturdays, and the Fire Brigade bingos are held every Fridays.

The cards are for sale at the Nain Inuit Community Government office.

4th Annual Gracie Flowers Memorial Ice Hockey Tournament

The 4th Annual Gracie Flowers Memorial Ice Hockey Tournament is just 15 days away and is coming closer and closer.

The Gracie tournament will be from March 12th to the 15th in Nain at the Husky Centre.

The registration fee is $20 for students in school and $30 for adults and youth who are not in school.

The tournament will consist of both male and female.

For the females, there will be the Atom/peewee division ages 13 to 18 years, and adult ages 19 years and older.

For the males, there will be the Bantam/midget division ages 13 to 17 years and the adults ages 18 years and older.

Come and honor Gracie’s memory by having fun at the tournament.

JHMS Kindness Week

The JHMS students are celebrating the JHMS Kindness week from February 24th to the 28th, 2020.

The schools across the world celebrated “Stand Up to bullying Day” yesterday.

Bullying is a major problem in our schools, workplaces, homes, and online.

Over the month of February, and throughout the year, Pink Shirt Day is celebrated throughout schools to aim and to raise awareness of these issues.

They held an assembly at the 4-12 school gym and one of our Radio Producers attended the Pink Shirt Day.

Here is the schedule for this week for students:

Today is Crazy for Kindness, students and staff can come to school with a crazy hair day, and tomorrow, Friday is Team Kindness and students dress in your favorite team or sportswear.

Tune into to our Teen Rockers show this afternoon to hear Part two of the “Pink Shirt Day”.

Torngat Mountain Information Session (Audio)

There was an information session held in Nain on the Torngat Mountains caribou herd.

Jason Dicker is the Wildlife Manager with the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says there is an increase in the Torngat Mountains caribou herd since 2014.

Dicker adds that the session was a good turn out and there were a lot of questions and concerns.

Trail Markers in Nain

The Nain Inuit Community Government has been busy with the trail markers this year.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKâk for the Nain Inuit Community Government.

He says the trail markers from Kikkertavak and Tâktok to Tinitjivik will be completed and connected to the rest of Labrador today.

They’ve got 3 workers that look out every couple days or so to check on the markers.

Once one of the workers will be laid off, they will have 2 of the workers maintaining the trail, and will groom the trail with the small groomer only when is needed.

Dicker would like to notify everyone that there are rattles South of Etua Noah’s and Zoar, and if they happen to get bigger, they’ll move the trail markers.

Married Couples Day (Audio)

It’s Married Couples Traditional Day in Nain this coming Friday, February 28th, 2020.

This day was made to be a special occasion and prepared by our older generation.

Adam Lidd is a senior in Nain.

He says he remembers they would go hunting for partridges and caribou.
And even gathering berries and bake apples in the summer and storing them away in their sheds or little porches.
