Makkovik 27th Jamboree

The 27th Annual Makkovik Jamboree will be holding a two night event this year.

Kim Andersen is now the Team Leader for DHSD.

She says there will be local performers entertaining on Friday, March 13th, and invited guests from out of town performing on Saturday, March 14th.

Andersen says there will also be an event for a long time co-worker who retired last fall in November of 2019.

This event is a dedication for Linda Pottle, who for many years organized the Makkovik Jamboree and served the community as Team Leader for DHSD.

The Theme for this is called “It’s a Great Day to be Alive”.

Andersen says they have two invited guests who have responded and will be there to attend the Silver Wolf Band from Goose Bay and Gary Mitchell from St. John’s who has been the key MC for the Jamboree.

She added a smokeless candle will also be lighted during the jamboree to remember and honour people who have passed away in 2019 and 2020, and will have pictures posted of those for the families.

Six/Sevenplex Update (Audio)

The families were selected for the Sevenplex last month.

Michelle Kinney is the Deputy Minister of Health and Social Development with the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says the committee held a meeting and reviewed the applications for the Sevenplex.

They selected the seven families for the seven units and have one vacant unit in the Sixplex.

Kinney says the purpose for the sevenplex is for families who were in need of housing, who were either at risk of losing their children or potentially could have children placed back with them if they had housing and families that were engaged with CSSD and with our Family Connections Program.

She adds that they have one vacant unit designated for a senior.

Charges withdrawn from Muskrat Falls

There are five people charged with breaches of court orders in connection with the protests at the Muskrat Falls site in October of 2016.

And their charges have either been acquitted or had their charges withdrawn.

Defence lawyer Mark Gruchy says that means the five members of the Labrador Land Protectors are now free of the court process.

The charges were laid after Nalcor sought a court injunction to prevent people from entering or blocking the construction site.

Gruchy says the case hits a nerve, and he was first drawn into the issue following the detention of Beatrice Hunter.

He noted that the use of court injunctions in resource development disputes was effectively rolling back the clock on reconciliation.
