Canada Post Getting Back to Normal

Most of Canada Post’s employees are back to work and regular mail routes are resuming Tuesday in St. John’s and the surrounding area.

Canadian Union of Postal Workers local representative Craig Dyer said Monday was the first day the sorting facility on Kenmount Road had the majority of its workers in the building since before the COVID-19 pandemic hit Newfoundland and Labrador.

Five employees tested positive, all linked to a cluster stemming from Caul’s Funeral Home on LeMarchant Road.

While trying to get mail out to people who have been waiting for two weeks is important, they also want to do it in a way that doesn’t endanger themselves or their families.

Last week, Canada Post resumed operations at the Kenmount Road facility.

The focus was on getting cheques out to people as fast as possible.

On Monday, the building was given another full cleaning, with regular mail routes resuming Tuesday.

Don’t Take Any Risks During Easter

Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe is appealing to Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement to ensure they continue practicing social distancing and to refrain from any gatherings during the Easter season in order to help prevent potential exposure and spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.

“The Easter week is a special time for all of us – a time when we normally gather with family and friends, when we help our neighbors, when we go off on the land or go to our cabins,” President Lampe, “As we prepare for Easter, I encourage all residents of Nunatsiavut to find alternate and creative ways to celebrate, gather and worship. Right now there are no known cases of COVID-19 in our communities, but that should not be a reason to be complacent. Things are changing very quickly, and we all must assume the virus is already in our communities. We all have to do our part to protect ourselves, our families and each other.”

The President is asking that there be no travel to and between any Labrador Inuit community during the Easter break unless it is vitally essential. As well, those going off on the land or to their cabins should only do so with people whom they live with, he says, and there should be no social gatherings or events whatsoever.

“We are asking all families and friends to celebrate Easter with the loved ones they live with all the time and to avoid travelling to see other family members or friends or gathering in large groups. We cannot afford to take any risks.”

Government of Canada CERB

The Government of Canada had outlined when you should be applying for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB) today, Monday, April 6th.

This was put into place to ease online traffic and avoid system crashes as millions of Canadians try to access funds.

They are as follows: for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit:

If you were born in January, February or March you can apply for this benefit on Mondays
If you were born in April, May or June apply on Tuesday
If you were born in July, August or September you can apply on Wednesdays
If you were born in October, November or December you can apply on Thursdays
Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays are for everyone

The application system to process claims for emergency income support benefits due to the COVID-19 crisis has opened, reportedly without a hitch. But the federal government is facing some criticism for designing a program that disqualifies some people in need, including students or people who work reduced hours.

Employment Minister Carla Qualtrough’s office said Monday that everything seemed to be going smoothly in the first few hours of the portal opening for the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), which is being managed by the Canada Revenue Agency.

Hundreds of thousands of applications are expected to flood the system in the coming week, and the system is prepared to handle millions of claims.

We will have more coverage on this once available.
