Post Pandemic Plan Not at the Forefront Right Now, says Health Minister

The province’s health minister says it’s premature to think about the planning for coming out the other side of the COVID-19 pandemic at this time.

John Haggie says they need to see what the effects of the Easter weekend will have on the province’s figures. Only then will they be in a better position to make an estimate about any kind of return to some kind of normal.

Haggie says there has been discussion around the idea. For example, Europe is saying four weeks without a case, and other areas less.

He says they will cross that bridge when they come to it and use the most up to date public health guidance at that point. Then, the question is around it not being a free-for-all, and how they re-introduce a return to normality.

NICG and RCMP BYLAWS on Silencers

The NICG and the Nain RCMP are working together to inform residents about silencers not permitted within the town limit.

We spoke with Sergeant Ed Nugent with the Nain RCMP on February 5th, 2020.

He says this bylaw was put in place from the Nain Inuit Community Government.

This bylaw states that silencers are not permitted in town limits and anyone using a silencer within town limits can get a fine.

We also spoke with Nain AngajukKak, Joe Dicker about the concern.

He says this bylaw has been in place for many years.

And the NICG and the Nain RCMP have been receiving complaints from the community about this issue.

If you are caught using a silencer in town, you will get a convicted fine of $500.

Dicker adds that NICG office has also been getting calls and complaints about the bylaw.

A written letter will be mailed from the NICG office as a warning.

The NICG will be keeping a paper trail of each incident.

If you have any concerns about this bylaw, you can call the Town Office at 922-2842.

Sadly, three people have died from COVID-19 in NL.

Thank you to those who adhered to the public health recommendations and celebrated Easter differently this year.

I am still receiving reports of people “looking for loopholes” and this is unacceptable. People must stop trying to find ways to work around the guidelines and simply use good judgment. If you have to ask if something is allowed, it might not be the best decision, so please take the advice seriously.
