No New Cases of COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador

Yesterday it was announced that Newfoundland and Labrador has no new confirmed cases of COVID-19. The total number of confirmed cases in the province remains at 260.

The regional breakdown of the 260 cases is as follows:
• Eastern Health – 242
• Central Health – 8
• Labrador-Grenfell Health – 6
• Western Health – 4

Fifty-two per cent of cases are female and forty-eight per cent are male.
By age, there are 22 people 19 years old and under, 38 between 20-39, 38 between 40-49, 58 between 50-59, 57 between 60-69, and 47 people who are 70 years old and above.

One person is in hospital due to the virus.

Two hundred and fifty-five people have recovered.

There have been three deaths from COVID-19.

To date, 11,495 people have been tested.

Seafood Harvesters and Plant Workers Exempt From COVID-19 Travel Restrictions (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government and Torngat Fish Co-op wishes to advise that while seafood harvesters and plant workers (including contractors, short-term employees and managers) are exempt from COVID-19 travel restrictions, the following is being recommended:

• Those who have any respiratory symptoms, are awaiting test results for COVID-19, or have been advised by Public Health authorities to self-isolate, are being asked not travel to Labrador Inuit communities.
• Those travelling to Labrador Inuit communities from within Newfoundland and Labrador who do not have COVID-19-related symptoms etc., will no longer be required to self-isolate for 14 days in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. However, they must self-monitor for symptoms for 14 days after arriving any Labrador Inuit community and when on a fishing vessel.
• To follow the same provincial guidelines as every other member of the community, including:

– Practicing good hand hygiene;
– Avoiding touching your face; o Coughing or sneezing into your sleeve or into a tissue and dispose of it properly;
– Maintaining a physical distance of at least two arm lengths (two metres), or wear a mask in physical distancing cannot be maintained; and
– Staying at home and not go to work if sick.

Torngat Fish Co-op will implement measures that will be on par or exceed industry standards with respect to COVID-19 precautions.

“Torngat Fish Co-op has and will continue to work with our employees, Inuit Community Governments and Nunatsiavut Government for a safe working environment during these unprecedented times. We will continue to provide information on our measures as the processing season commences,” says General Manager Keith Watts.

Makkovik J.C. Erhardt Grads (Audio)

As many of you know, Saturday, May 23rd was supposed to be prom/grad day at J.C. Erhardt.

We spoke with Jennifer Price who is the kindergarten and Grade 1 Teacher and also on the Grad Committee.

She says that they couldn’t do the big celebration they had to do some little things so couple of the things they decided to do was to decorate.

So they asked the community to decorate their windows or put signs in their yards for the kids to go around and see.

VALE Shipping Notice

Vale Newfoundland and Labrador has issued a shipping notice to the Public for May 24, 2020.

Due to weather and ice conditions the pontoon bridges at Taktok and Tabor Island will be removed on Monday, May 25, 2020.

There will be no safe crossings of the ships track at this time.

NICG Honda Ticket Draw Update

The Nain Recreation Department are still selling tickets on the Honda 420 Foot Shift.

Tickets can be bought at the Nain Inuit Community Government office or at the Nain Northern Store.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director for NICG.

She says the Honda is valued at $10,000 and was purchased at the Notre Dame Agency.

Only 1000 tickets were printed and are being sold for $15 each.

With money raised from the Honda tickets, the Recreation Department will once again provide financial help towards different groups in the community.

Ivany says with the monies they raised from the 2019 Skandic Wide Track 900 Ace snowmobile, the recreation dept donated $3000 towards the Nain Moravian church account for funds to purchase stove oil, and materials for the church.

Recreation also provided a $3000 donation towards the Nain Minor hockey and another 3 thousand was donated to the Nain Care and $3,259 was donated to Nain Youth travel group.

The draw date is set for July 1st, 2020, or when all tickets are sold.

Ivany adds if you send an email money transfer you must provide in the notes, who the ticket is for, and your home address.

COVID-19 Update

Yesterday was Day 14 there was no new cases of COVID-19 in NL.

3 are in hospital, of these 3, 1 is in the ICU.

260 cases total in NL and 4 positive cases remain (3 in hospital and 1 is not).

If all goes well, we could move to alert level 3 on June 8th, 2020.
