COVID-19 Update

Yesterday, September 1st, the province of Newfoundland and Labrador started the month with no new confirmed cases, with one active case.

There have been a total of 269 cases with 265 people recovered from the virus.

To date, 32,200 total people have been tested.

Remember to have a face mask on hand to enter into all indoor public places.

In Alert Level 2, individuals should continue to practice good infection prevention and control practices.

Daily preventative actions can help to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Nunatsiavut Group of Companies Projects (Audio to be added later)

Nunatsiavut Group of Companies had a pretty quiet year compared to the other years due to COVID-19.

Sarah Leo is the Chief Operating Officer of the Company.

She says that they had to change some of their work and what they were doing with the pandemic and necessary restrictions.

Leo says Nunatsiavut Construction has been working around Nain, Hopedale and Rigolet and went up to Base Camp.

Presidential Candidates Announced

Two candidates have been nominated for the position of President of Nunatsiavut.

Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement will choose from either incumbent Johannes Lampe of Nain and Andrea Webb/Tuglavina of Happy Valley-Goose Bay when they go to the polls on October 6. Nominations closed today at 12 noon (Atlantic Standard Time).

The election was originally scheduled to take place on May 5, but was postponed amid growing concerns over the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, and to ensure the process is properly conducted in accordance with the spirit, intent and requirements of the Labrador Inuit Constitution and the Nunatsiavut Elections Act.

The election will take place in the five Labrador Inuit communities, as well as North West River and Happy Valley-Goose Bay. (Residents of Mud Lake can vote in Happy Valley-Goose Bay).

Beneficiaries residing in the Constituency of Canada will vote by mail-in ballot. A mail ballot kit will be forwarded to each Beneficiary at his or her last known address.

Beneficiaries are reminded to ensure their correct address is updated with the Registrar’s office in Nain. The advance poll will take place on September 29, 2020.

Torngat Wildlife 2021 Photo Calendar Contest

The Torngat Wildlife, Plants and Fisheries Secretariat are holding their annual photo contest.

Submissions are accepted until September 18, 202 for the 2021 Nunatsiavut Stewardship Calendar Annual Photo Contest.

They are focusing on photos that represent baing a good steward of Fish, Wildlife, or Plants in Nunatsiavut.

Rules for submission are: Please don’t submit any photos in black and white, or of any communities, recognizable people, specific buildings, or ones taken on a cellphone.

Photos must be only in high quality; high resolution photos that are in landscape orientation will be accepted.

Include a short caption and location for each photograph.

Only fifteen photographs will be selected to be featured on the calendar and the winning photographers will be awarded a $50 cash prize.

To enter the photo contest, send your submissions to meredith.purcell@torngatsecretariat.ca by September 18th, 2020.

Parents Allowed 1st Day for Kindergarten

Government and school boards have come up with a format that will allow parents of kindergarten children in the schools.

The original back-to-school plan by the Eastern Health District did not allow parents entry into the school, but Education Minister Tom Osborne say that issue has now been resolved.

He first hinted that a solution was in the offing during Wednesday’s COVID-19 update, and has confirmed with VOCM news that school administrators have been informed that parents of kindergarten-age children can go into the school.

Many parents were upset at the thoughtof not accompanying their young children into the school, especially in their first days.

Meanwhile, Minister osborne expects to release details in the next day or two on measures to address the busing situation.

As it stands, 7,000 will be left off the bus because of COVID-19 restrictions.

Education Minister Gives Update on Masks

The Education Minister says masks will be mandatory in Grade 7 to 12 classrooms where physical distancing of at least one metre can’t be maintained.

Minister Osborne says additional buses won’t be in place until the end of September, but he assures that all students who are eligible for school busing will have it.

Public exams scheduled for January have been cancelled. Minister Osborne says they’re also looking at whether June public exams will go ahead or be cancelled.

The Minister says further details will be provided on measures to make school safer will be made on Thursday.

Archaeology Presentation in Hopedale

There will be a presentation tonight that will be presented online.

Nicholas Flowers is from Hopedale.

Flowers has been called in for a contract position with the Newfoundland and Labrador Archaeological Society to help with the 2019 Community Collection Archaeological Research Project.

He says the presentation will be about the Moravian Midden collection.

Nunatsiavut Government held their regular meeting in Goose Bay last week.

Tyler Edmunds is the First Minister.

He says there were quite a few agenda items discussed and one issue on the decision TRHA made.

After School Registration

Registration for the After School Program is coming up quickly.

Gwen Dyson is the Acting Afterschool Program Supervisor.

She says registration takes place on Monday, September 7, 2020.

Parents can drop by to the Jeremias Sillitt Community Center at 6pm to register your child/children.

This will be a first come first serve basis, and you must have your child/children’s MCP card.

Only parents will be permitted inside for registration due to the covid-19 restrictions.
