Nain and Makkovik Fish Plant Update

The Torngat Fish Producers Co-operative Society office in Nain completed Char and Scallop fishery last Friday on August 28, 2020.

Deidre Kolmeister is the Office Supervisor at the Nain Fish Plant.

She says they landed 40,633 pounds of green scallops and 1,596 meats.

This year they landed 33,458 pounds of Char.

The Nain Fish plant is selling Scallops and Smoked Char.

2 lbs packs of Scallops cost $32 and $14.75 for smoke fish per lb.

She says what they have left in the freezers is what they have left for sale.

Kolmeister says the plant will be finishing up their last 2 weeks at the plant.

During the last few weeks they will be smoking fish for the head office in Goose bay, then the last week they will be doing the clean up.

And here is an update from the Makkovik Fish Plant.

We spoke with Angel Chaulk who is the Office Assistant in the plant.

She says there are 5 Turbot boats; and 31 employee’s working; there are 2 night shift workers working in the evenings.

To date 108,464 lbs of turbot has been landed.

Chaulk says there will be 3 turbot boats to unload today with plentiful turbot.

And production is going well.

COVID-19 Update

Yesterday (Wednesday, September 2), Newfoundland and Labrador has no new confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The province continues to have one active case.

Two hundred and sixty-five people have recovered from the virus.

To date, 32,200 people have been tested.

In Alert Level 2, individuals should continue to practice good infection prevention and control practices.

Daily preventative actions can help to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

These actions include:
• Stay informed, be prepared, and follow public health advice;
• Wash your hands frequently with warm water and soap for at least 20 seconds;
• Use an alcohol based hand sanitizer in the absence of soap and water;
• Do not touch your face;
• Practice proper cough and sneeze etiquette;
• Wear a non-medical mask in public indoor spaces;
• Maintain physical distancing;
• Increase cleanliness and ventilation of public spaces and worksites; and,
• Stay home if you are sick and avoid contact with others.

NCC Nominations

The NunatuKavut Community Council (NCC) released an official list of nominees yesterday for its 2020 general election.

Todd Russell will return as President by acclamation. Four other council positions were also declared.

Nine people are in the running for a newly-established role representing the council in all the areas of Canada outside NunatuKavut.

The election was supposed to take place in May, but was postponed until Tuesday, September 29 due to COVID-19.

Voting for the 5 remaining positions will take place virtually. Polls open ahead a week before elections.

The list of nominees and further information on the general election are available at nunatukavut.ca.

Moose Licenses Available

The Nunatsiavut Government has 23 moose licenses available to be drawn and harvested by Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement for the 2020-2021 hunting season.

The moose licenses will be distributed as follows:

Nain———- 6 licenses
Hopedale ———4 licenses
Postville———–2 licenses
Makkovik ———-3 licenses
Rigolet ————–4 licenses
Upper Lake Melville—–4 licenses

Licenses will be valid for 14 days. If a license is not filled within 14 days, a new draw will take place to designate a new hunter. This will continue until all licenses are filled.

Interested Beneficiaries must apply at their local Nunatsiavut Government office. There is a limit of one license per household. You must present yourself at a Nunatsiavut Government office to have your name entered into the draw.

Proof of residency as well as your Nunatsiavut Beneficiary card may be requested.

The 2020-2021 Moose hunting season will open September 14 and close March 7.

SmartICE Update (Audio to be added later)

The SmartICE Northern Production Center in Nain is currently looking for youth to take part in this month’s training course.

Rex Holwell Jr. is the Northern Production Lead with SmartICE.

Holwell Jr. adds that there needs to be 6 or more Smart buoys made and will be making them sometime after the training course.

He would like to also add that he will be heading to St. John’s soon to do the course of Standard First Aid.

Presidential Debate

The NG Presidential Inuktitut debate will be happening live tomorrow afternoon at 1pm on the OKâlaKatiget Society.

Two candidates have been nominated for the position of President of Nunatsiavut.

Johannes Lampe of Nain and Andrea Webb/Tuglavina of Happy Valley Goose Bay.

Sarah Townley the moderator will participate in the debate by phone.

The event will also be available via live streaming on OK Society Web Radio at www.oksocietyradio.com.

Literacy Camp Children

The Literacy Camp with Frontier College and Nunatsiavut Government ended last Friday, August 28th.

One of our radio producers of OKalaKatiget spoke with some of the children that attended the camp.

Overall, they said that they had a lot of fun doing the activities.

Some of their favorites were rock painting, going to the playground and more.

Archaeology Presentation in Hopedale Update

The Archaeology Presentation in Hopedale turned out to be a good turnout last evening.

Nicholas Flowers was one of the presenters.

He says the presentation was about the Moravian Midden Collection about the Missionaries in Hopedale.

Flowers says a few people showed up to the presentation.

They had a good time and there was a few questions asked.

Flowers says that Jamie Brake from the Archaeology Office in St. John’s and some people in the United States joined the presentation.

The whole presentation will be uploaded to the Newfoundland and Labrador Archaeology Society website and also onto Youtube for anyone who had missed it.

It will be uploaded on both websites in a couple of days time.

Nain Husky Centre Update

The renovations on the Nain Husky Centre was started in July and repairs are expected to be completed by Monday, September 14.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKak of the Nain Inuit Community Government Office.

He says they got a report last Friday, and the keys will be handed over on that Monday, with the interior quite ready too.

Dicker says whats left to do is put wiring on the outside, steps and phones and cleanup.

He is happy to say it will be something good for the children this fall.

Fuel Prices Predictions

The Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices is predicting the price of gasoline to drop this week.

According to spokesperson George Murphy, the price of gasoline will drop by a cent a litre.

Heating and stove oil, along with diesel will drop by a cent as well.
