No New Confirmed Cases

Yesterday, October 14th, Newfoundland and Labrador had no new confirmed cases and has 8 active cases.

There is a total of 283 cases and 271 have recovered.

Up to date, 47,366 people have been tested.

In Alert Level 2, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians should continue to practice good infection prevention and control practices.

Daily preventative actions can help to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

People are reminded that COVID Alert is available for download free through the Apple or Google Play app stores. Public Health is encouraging people to download the app to help reduce the spread of the virus.

Nain Transition House Funding Announced

There was funding announced yesterday from the Federal Government for the Nain Transition House.

MP Yvonne Jones and MHA Lela Evans were there along with the Executive Director Nicole Dicker and AngajukKâk Joe Dicker.

They did the the announcement at the Nain Transition House and OKâlaKatiget Radio went and recorded.

There was a total of $97,000 announced in funding that was a part of the Emergency Support funding from the government.

Torngat Regional Housing Association (Audio)

The construction of new homes and continued home repairs are going well on the north coast communities.

William Lucy is the Coordinator for Torngat Regional Housing Association.

He says the new homes are all up and covered, but right now the crews are waiting for sidings to arrive.

Lucy says it’s harder right now because of COVID-19, and there are no sidings to get because they had to order that elsewhere aside from the Island and that has slowed everything down.

No New Confirmed Case of COVID-19

Yesterday, Tuesday, October 13, Newfoundland and Labrador had no new confirmed cases of COVID-19. The province has eight active cases.

271 people have recovered from the virus and to date, 47,065 people have been tested.

Fuel Price Predictions

The price of fuel looks to be moving upward this week, according to the Consumer Group for Fair Gas Prices.

The group says gasoline and diesel could both see an increase of just over one cent per litre (1.2 and 1.4 respectively.)

Heating and stove oils may go up about 1.9 cents per litre.

Contractors Awarded to Mount Peal Business

Happy Valley-Goose Bay’s new Mental Health Facility contract is awarded to a Mount Pearl business.

Work is slated to begin on a new mental health unit in HV-GB early next year.

Moss Development Corporation was awarded a $5.1 million contract to construct the new unit at the Labrador Health Centre.

The extension will provide private rooms for 6 patients receiving mental health care, as well as a group therapy room.

An estimated 25 to 50 local workers will be hired for construction, according to Moss Development.

Work is expected to wrap up in 2022.

Entrance Construction Begins for the Health Sciences Centre

The Eastern Health would like to inform the public that there will be construction at the entrance of the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s.

The construction will begin on October 16th.

The work will result in a permanent extension of the main entrance to provide additional indoor space to help facilitate COVID-19 screening upon arrival of the facility.

Patients, clients and visitors will continue to be able to access the facility through the main entrance during the construction and normal safeguards will be in place.

However, the public is to be advised to proceed with caution and follow posted signage in the area.

The Eastern Health would like to thank the public for their cooperation during this time.

They would also like to remind the public to assist with physical distancing while in their health-care facilities and to arrive no more than 10 minutes prior to their scheduled appointments.

Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB)

The Canada Recovery Benefit (CRB) gives income support to employed and self-employed individuals who are directly affected by COVID-19 and are not entitled to Employment Insurance (EI) benefits. The CRB is administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).

If you are eligible for the CRB, you can receive $1,000 ($900 after taxes withheld) for a 2-week period.

If your situation continues past 2 weeks, you will need to apply again. You may apply up to a total of 13 eligibility periods (26 weeks) between September 27, 2020 and September 25, 2021.

NICG Project Update (Audio)

The Nain Inuit Community Government is busy with their summer projects.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKâk for the Nain ICG.

He says Budgells has been busy with the waterline replacement on Sandbanks Road and will continue to do so until early November.

In the meantime, he would like to notify the public that the roads are going to have to be detoured for the next 2-3 weeks.

As for the Nain Husky Centre, Dicker says the only thing they are waiting on is Bell Aliant for the phone lines.

Thanksgiving Sale Results

The annual Thanksgiving sale was held at the Nain Moravian Church yesterday, October 12, 2020.

Joan Dicker is a community member and volunteered with the Thanksgiving sale.

She says the food was brought to the church on Sunday, October 11th and had the Thanksgiving sale on Monday, October 12th.

The Nain Moravian Church sale which was usually held at the JS Community Centre was held at the church for the first time due to the pandemic.

She says with the help from the church members and volunteers, altogether with the cold plate sale, hot plate sale, auction of baked goods and the church sale, a total amount of $2,275.30 was raised.

The Nain Moravian Church would like to thank everyone who helped out with the fundraiser this weekend, and those that made donations and brought forth foods and supported the Nain Moravian Church.
