2nd Annual Tom Jararuse Dart Tournament

The 2nd Annual Tom Jararuse Memorial Dart Tournament will be going ahead on October 23rd-24th, 2020.

It will be taking place at the Nanuk Centre with a limited space of 25 people at a time and you must wear a mask.

The teams will consist of 4 players per team; 2 male and 2 female with a fee of $25 per player.

Here are the prizes:

1st place will be $2000 ($500 each) and Hoodies
2nd place, $1000 ($250 each) and long sleeve shirts
3rd place, $500 ($125 each) and t shirts

There will also be a few other prizes put out.

The deadline for the dart tournament is tomorrow, October 22nd at 4pm.

Swear-in Ceremony for President Lampe

The Nunatsiavut Government is advising that a ceremony will take place at 2 pm today Wednesday, October 21, in front of the Illusuak Cultural Centre in Nain to officially swear-in Johannes Lampe as President of Nunatsiavut.

The Oath of Office will be administered by Nain Elder Joan Dicker.

The event is open to the public. All public health protocols are to be followed during the event (social distancing, face masks, etc.).

No New Confirmed Case of COVID-19

Yesterday, Tuesday, October 20, Newfoundland and Labrador had no new confirmed cases of COVID-19. The province has eleven active cases.

272 people have recovered from the virus and to date, 49,117 people have been tested.

People entering Newfoundland and Labrador are reminded to adhere to the orders from the Chief Medical Officer of Health and self-isolate in accordance with the province’s Public Health requirements. Everyone has a part to play in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

In Alert Level 2, Newfoundlanders and Labradorians should continue to practice good infection prevention and control practices. Daily preventative actions can help to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

People are reminded that COVID Alert is available for download free through the Apple or Google Play app stores. Public Health is encouraging people to download the app to help reduce the spread of the virus.

Postville ICG Updates (Audio)

The Postville Inuit Community Government is busy with the projects for their community,

Glen Sheppard is the AngajukKâk for the Postville ICG.

He says that their main project would be doing the final touches to their Interpretation Centre.

Another project include the Town’s new storage shed that will be located by the town garage.

Donations arranged by Susan Onalik

More donations were brought to Provincial Airlines in St. John’s yesterday.

Susan Onalik of St. John’s who is originally from Nunatsiavut organized a huge donation of groceries last month.

Onalik says after the media coverage she was contacted by The Single Parents Association and that they had a lot items that they would like to donate.

Onalik adds that the items will not just be for Nain, but for the other Nunatsiavut communities as well.

We will be speaking with Onalik sometime this week to find out more.

Investigation into Incident Involving Municipal Enforcement Officer and Inuk Man Welcomed

The following statement was being issued yesterday by Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe:

“The video posted to social media showing the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay’s enforcement officer throwing an Inuk man to the ground has raised concerns among many Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.”

“The Nunatsiavut Government understands that the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay has committed to having the matter independently investigated, and that the municipal enforcement officer has been placed on administrative duties, pending the outcome of that investigation.”

“The Nunatsiavut Government hears the concerns of Beneficiaries and fully expects that appropriate action will be taken once the investigation is completed.”

Nain Transition House Funding Announced (Audio)

There was funding announced last week from the Federal Government for the Nain Transition house.

MP Yvonne Jones was there along with the Executive Director Nicole Dicker, AngajukKâk Joe Dicker, MHA Lela Evans and Board member Heather Angnatok.

They did the announcement at the Nain Inuit Community Government boardroom and OKâlaKatiget Radio went and recorded.

There was a total of $97,000 announced in funding that was a part of the Emergency Support funding from the government.

TV Producer Ad

The OKâlaKatiget Society has a job opening for a Television Producer.

This position is a full-time permanent position.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
• Identifying story ideas and conducting research
• Operating camera, lighting and audio equipment
• Planning and conducting interviews and sources
• Outlining and writing scripts for editing
• Transcribing
• Digitally editing film on Avid software

The position is open until it is filled, and resumes should be forwarded before 4 pm.

Preferences will be given to Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

Applicants are preferred to be bilingual in Inuktitut and English as well.

Community Enhancement Program

The Nain Inuit Community Government has received funds for Community Enhancement Employment Program.

NICG is taking names and the number of hours needed to qualify for Employment Insurance.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKâk for NICG and he says that the advertisement will be posted for anyone to apply for the enhancement program.

Some of the project descriptions will include the following:
Construction of garbage bins, to erect a new and repair old cemetery fences, cleaning of the Moravian Church, to put up the community Christmas tree, make and sell crafts, and other duties as required.

This program applies to individuals who need less than 400 hours to qualify for EI.

The expected start date for the project is Friday, October 23rd, 2020.
