Elders Survey (Audio)

The Department of Health and Social development is conducting an Elders Survey.

Beverly Hunter is the Elders Coordinator for DHSD.

She says that so far, they have approximately 25 elders who has completed the survey and she is hoping for more elders to give her a call to take part.

Hunter adds that the purpose of the survey is to get the knowledge and wisdom from elders to create existing and new programming and services for elders.

One New Case of COVID-19 in Newfoundland and Labrador

Today (Thursday, April 8), Newfoundland and Labrador has one new confirmed case of COVID-19.

The one new confirmed case is a female in the Eastern Health region between 40-49 years of age. The case is under investigation.

Contact tracing by Public Health officials is underway. Anyone considered a close contact has been advised to quarantine.

There are five active cases of COVID-19 in the province.

The regional breakdown of the five active cases is as follows:
• Eastern Health – 2
• Central Health – 1
• Labrador-Grenfell Health – 0
• Western Health – 2

There are no new recoveries and 1,007 people have recovered. No one is in hospital due to COVID-19.

To date, 126,025 people have been tested. People can check their COVID-19 test results online here.

There are no new presumptive positive cases.

LGH Advising Public COVID-19 Vaccination Appointments

Labrador-Grenfell Health is advising the public that COVID-19 vaccination appointments for priority groups continue to be available across the region.

Individuals from the following groups are encouraged to book an appointment:

• Adults (18 years of age and older) who identify as Indigenous.
• Adults 60 years of age and older,
• Adults in marginalized populations where infection could have disproportionate consequences (e.g., people experiencing homelessness or with precarious housing arrangements),
• First responders (including career and volunteer fire fighters, police officers, border services, and search and rescue crew).
• Frontline health care workers who may come into direct contact with patients (includes private health care workers and home support workers).
• Staff, residents, and essential visitors at congregate living settings (shelters, group homes, transition houses, correctional facilities, and children or youth residential settings).

To book an appointment, you can either do the online self-registration at portal.healthmyself.net and enter the authorization code, BGLDSTRNG21, then select appointment type in “Covid-19 Vaccine Dose 1 (by invitation only)” or call 1-833-960-3643.

Postville Ice Conditions (Audio)

The community of Postville did some random ice checks within the area.

Glen Sheppard is the AngajukKâk for the Postville Inuit Community Government, he says that they have two male workers who work with the trail markers.

They have been testing the ice with an ice auger and the thickness of the ice varies with each area.

He adds that areas around Sandy point is 25 inches thick, big point is at 24 inches thick and the rapids is at 26 inches thick.

Easter Games Schedule

Yesterday the Easter events ended off with the Inuit Games for Nain.

Today, Thursday, April 8, starting at 1-3pm there is Children’s and Adult’s Ice Games down to the Nain Harbour.

Children’s games are Kamutik Race, Funny Face Contest, Easter Egg Rolling, Ball Between Leg Race, Jump Rope Race, Cross Over Race, and Hula Hoop Target Throw.

Adults’ games are Ball Between Leg Race, Jump Rope Race, Ball/Back Race, Hula Hoop Target Throw, Ladder Toss, Egg Toss, Cross Over Race, Easter Egg Rolling and Crab Race.

There is also the 3rd Annual Martin R Jararuse Easter Dart Competition for ages 16 years and up.

You must have 3 women and 3 men with 6 players per team, with a fee of $10 per player.

1st place prize is $80 per player, 2nd place prize is $50 per player, and the 3rd place prize is $30 per player.

Base Camp Closed for 2021

An Inuit homeland, one of the last untamed, unspoiled places left on the planet. Comprised of 9,700 square kilometres of spectacular wilderness, the Torngat Mountains National Park stretches from Saglek Fjord to the Northern tip of Labrador, and Westward from the Atlantic seacoast to the Québec border.

In partnership with the Nunatsiavut Government, Air Borealis and the Nunatsiavut Group of Companies will not be opening the Torngat Mountains Base Camp and Research Station (TMBC) for tourism and general visitation during the 2021 season.

The Torngat Mountains Base Camp and Research Station is located on Labrador Inuit Land adjacent to the Southern boundary of the Torngat Mountains National Park.

“The ongoing COVID-19 public health crisis continues to make the safe, practical operation of the Base Camp impossible for tourists and general visitors at this time. Despite this setback, we remain deeply committed to our work with Air Borealis, the Nunatsiavut Group of Companies and Parks Canada towards a sustainable, long-term future for Base Camp that will let visitors and researchers continue to experience our homeland,” says Nunatsiavut’s Minister of Language, Culture and Tourism, Jim Lyall.

Air Borealis and the Nunatsiavut Group of Companies look forward to welcoming visitors to enjoy the upgrades to site facilities, and additional experiences that will continue to exceed guest expectations in 2022.

14th Premier Sworn In

Premier Andrew Furey has completed the formal component to the election, being sworn in at the Government House at 9am this morning.

Andrew Furey sworn in as Newfoundland and Labrador’s 14th premier.

He said “Thank you so much Newfoundland and Labrador, for electing me as the 14th Premier in our great province. It is an honor to be sworn in this morning by Judy Foote, Lieutenant Governor of NL, joined by incredibly supportive family.

He won the election with 22 seats in the 40-member parliament.

Furey’s cabinet will be sworn in just after 11am.

Nain’s Easter games Schedule for today

Today, April 7, the events started with Children Ice Games and they are going on until 3pm at the Nain harbour.

Children’s games are Snowshoe Race, Gas Can Race, Floss Race, Blindfold Race, Head Knees & Toes, Horse Obstacle Race and Stick Throw.

There will be Adults Inuit Games this evening from 7-10pm with a maximum of 50 people located at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

The Inuit games are Owl Hop, One-Foot-High Kick, Airplane, Seal Crawl, Monkey Dance, Musk Ox, Arm Wrestling, Knuckle Hop, Knuckle Push Ups, and One Arm Push Up.

There will also be a Plastic Bag Skin Boot Making Contest for adults from 7pm at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

All designs and everything else must be made of plastic bags, you can also use clear tape to keep the design together and for attaching designs.

1st prize is $250, 2nd prize is $150, and the 3rd prize is $75.

Also, at 7pm there will be a Cake Decorating Contest.

Your cakes must be delivered by 7pm for judging, and please use the back door at the building.

Winners will be announced at 7:30pm; 1st place will get $250, 2nd place $175, and 3rd place $100.

Nova Scotia removing 14-day self-isolation

Nova Scotia has removed the 14-day self-isolation requirement for people travelling from Newfoundland & Labrador.

Nova Scotia public health has also confirmed that as of 8 am this morning, Wednesday, April 7th, individuals isolating in Nova Scotia travelling from N.L. are retroactively exempt from their 14-day self-isolation period.

Newfoundland and Labrador still requires those incoming from Nova Scotia to self-isolate for 14 days upon arrival.

Moose and Polar Bears

So far, five polar bears have been harvested in the Nunatsiavut Region.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources.

He says that three polar bears were harvested in the Nain area, one in Hopedale and one in Makkovik.

He adds that the bag limit this year is 12 and the deadline is June 30th, unless the 12 polar bears are harvested before the deadline date.

Broomfield says that the Moose hunt closed on March 7th, 2021 and 15 moose was harvested in the region out of 23 licenses that were available.
