Nain Quick Stop Closed

The Northwest Company opened up a convenience store in Nain called the Nain Quick stop.

This store has been in operation now since March of 2017.

And right now, the store is currently closed.

We spoke with Max Gillingham, who is the Store Manager at the Nain’s Everyday Store, also known as the Northern Store.

He says the Quick stop manager recently quit his position as Manager.

He adds that they are also short staffed.

Gillingham says there will be another update on July 30, 2021.

Ontario Natives Association

Ontario Natives Association casting call is looking for Indigenous, First Nations, Inuit or Metis individuals who want an unforgettable experience as they live for 30 days in the bush with travelling, surviving, and learning lessons to reconnect with the land and culture.

This is for indigenous men and woman who are 18 years or older and it will be a secret location in Canada and a life changing challenge.

Mary Simon Sworn In

A prominent Inuk leader, Mary Simon hails from Kuujjuaq, Nunavik. She is the first Indigenous person to be named Governor General of Canada.

Mary Simon was sworn in this morning as the 30th Governor General of Canada

Simon was Canada’s first ambassador for circumpolar affairs, she was a senior negotiator representing Inuit during Constitution repatriation negotiations and played the lead role in negotiating the creation of the Arctic Council – a high-level intergovernmental forum for the eight Arctic states.

Simon has also served as Canada’s ambassador to Denmark and spent six years at the helm of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, Canada’s national Inuit organization.

Throughout her career she has been a passionate advocate for Inuit rights, language, and culture.

RICG Wolfrey (Audio to be added later)

There are some summer projects on the go this year in the community of Rigolet.

Charlotte Wolfrey is the AngajukKâk for the Rigolet Inuit Community Government.

Wolfrey says that they have the water and sewer project, an upgrade to their boat launch, valve chambers will be getting housing, and the outdoor rink will be getting a door installed.

Wolfrey adds that its unfortunate they were unable to get access to the Schools gymnasium for summer activities for the youth.

We will be speaking with AngajukKâk Wolfrey later in the AtjiKangitut Program later to find out more.

Torngat Secretariat 2022 Calendar

Torngat Secretariat is looking for photos to feature in the 2022 Nunatsiavut Stewardship Calendar.

As always, 15 photographs will be selected to be featured and their photographers will be awarded a $50 cash prize.

DHSD Free Haircuts

The Nain Department of Health and Social Development were giving out free haircuts to adults this week.

We spoke with Jane Merkuratsuk who is the Community Health Worker.

She says this was the very first time DHSD held a free hair cut to this age group.

And the age group were for adults aged 31 to 49 years.

DHSD had 18 individuals that had free hair cuts this week.

Merkuratsuk says they had happy customers and they were booked up quick.

Visitation Restriction Reduced

Labrador – Grenfell Health is advising the public that effective today, July 23rd , visitor restrictions in place at all facilities will be reduced. The following guidelines are in place to support visitation and hours:

Acute Care will be from 10 am to 10pm daily.

For residents in Long Term Care will remain unchanged while they continue to work to accommodate families. Visitors may visit more often than one time each day.

If a patient/resident is in a shared room, visitors must follow physical distancing measures. They ask visitors respect the comfort level of the other patients/residents in the room.

Some spaces maybe unable to accommodate multiple visitors at the same time. In these situations, the clinical care team will work with the patient/visitor/family to identify options to visitations.

Visitations are encouraged in a patient/resident room or outdoors. Physical distancing must be maintained if visitation take place outside the room and inside the facility.

Each time you enter a health care facility please limit your visitation to one patient/resident in extenuating circumstances, visits with more than on patient/resident is permitted.

All visitors must register upon arrival and be screened for COVID-19. You may let the screeners know you have already completed your screening if your retuning more multiple visits same day. Please note there may be a delay in screening if there are a high number of visitors, be patient and respectful.

For appointments or Emergency Department visits: patients are asked if they consider a support person. Support persons may have to wait outside the facility to ensure there’s adequate space in the waiting area for patients. The care team will accommodate the support person in the treatment when requested by the patient.

Young Leaders Summit

The Young Leaders’ Summit on Northern Climate Change is an opportunity for youth, aged 18 to 30, to come together and discuss climate change mitigation and adaptation in Northern Canada.

Participants will learn about various impacts and actions from Elders, researchers, land-users, policy makers, and other climate leaders. This is also a great opportunity to connect with others from across the north.

The location for this summit will be at Akaitcho Bay, on the shores of Great Slave Lake, just outside of Yellowknife, Northwest Territories.

The eligibility is for anyone between the ages of 18-30, priority on regional representation from throughout the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and Yukon.

Applications are open until 11:59 PM on July 25th, 2021.

If you are accepted, you will be notified by email no later than July 27th, 2021.

Virtual participation may be available for selected parts of the schedule, depending on interest and funding.

Makkovik ICG Update (Audio to be added later)

The Makkovik Inuit Community Government is busy with some projects in their community.

Barry Andersen is the AngajukKâk for Makkovik Inuit Community Government.

He says that they have an inspector on site, monitoring the progress of the new subdivision.

Andersen also says that there are some contractors repairing the water and sewer lines and some summer student opportunities for this summer.

COVID-19 Update

Today, Thursday, July 22, Newfoundland and Labrador has no new confirmed cases of COVID-19 since the last public advisory.

There are no new confirmed cases of COVID-19 aboard the ship in the province. There is no risk to the community. On the ship anchored in Conception Bay that was first announced on July 13, the total number of confirmed cases remains at 31 crewmembers. Testing of all crew is completed and all crew are isolating. The ship anchored in Conception Bay that was first announced on July 5, has departed the province. The 14 confirmed cases related to that ship will no longer be included in the active case count.

There have been no new recoveries in the province and 1,377 people have recovered. There are two people in hospital due to COVID-19. One is a crewmember from the ship that was off the coast of Bay Bulls and one is a crewmember from the ship anchored in Conception Bay.

There are currently no active cases of COVID-19 in the province.

There is one active case of COVID-19 related to the ship that was off the coast of Bay Bulls and 31 active cases of COVID-19 on the ship anchored in Conception Bay.

The regional breakdown of the active cases is as follows:

Eastern Health
– 1 related to ship previously in Bay Bulls
– 31 on ship in Conception Bay
Central Health – 0
Labrador-Grenfell Health – 0
Western Health – 0

To date, 260,547 tests have been administered.
