17th Rhubarb Festival Hopedale

The 17th Annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale are continuing their events.

Today, August 4, there will be a Rhubarb Bake off with 3 categories such as Breads, Desserts and Jams. Items of goodies should be dropped off to the Nanuk Center no later than 4PM. There will only be two winners for this bake off and the first-place winner will get $200.00, and the second-place winner will be $100.00.

There will also be having some Mini Fair Dice Game, coin in a bucket, hockey shot and a basketball throw, they ask if anyone want a table for these games you can call Sukie Aggek or Danielle Pottle at 933 3386

There will be a Card Board Boat Race with mixed doubles teams to follow and they add that the boat can use a piece of board for stability. The first-place winner will get $600.00, for second, $400.00 and third place will get $200.00

ITK Upcoming President Election

Election of the President of Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami will take place in September 2021, following ITk’s Annual General Meeting.

The Deadline for nominations is Wednesday, August 12, 2021 at 5pm ET.

Inuit at least 18 years of age maybe nominated by the designated Member Representative of the following Organizations: Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, Makivik Corporation, or the Nunatsiavut Government or may submit a Canadian Application Form.

Individual candidates not nominated by Member Representative must provide a cover letter that outlines their experience in leadership role, knowledge of issues important to Inuit as well as a description of what they would like to achieve as ITK president, and secure the signatures of 20 Inuit aged 18 or older, who support the candidacy.

Canadians will be given 10 minute opportunity to address Members and Delegates during the ITK AGM, and encouraged to deliver their remarks in person in the event the AGM is held in person.

In the event the AGM is held virtually, Canadians will be provided information to join the videoconference by computer or telephone.

The ITK president is elected through democratic governance structure that represents all Inuit.

Voters are cast by Members Representatives of Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated, Makivik Corporation, or the Nunatsiavut Government, in addition to two delegates per region and the ITK Vice-President.

Language Conversation

The Department of Language, Culture and Tourism will be hosting the first informal language conversation this evening.

Meghan Dicker Nochasak is the Language and Culture summer student.

She says that this will be held at the Illusuak from 6 to 8pm for ages 13 years and up.

Anyone will be welcome to share stories, encouragement, etc. regarding language.

Dicker Nochasak adds that there will be updates later about hosting a virtual conversation via Zoom so everyone can join and take part!

She adds that a conversation about language/Inuttitut has many connotations so we would like to ensure this is a safe space to talk.

COVID-19 Live Rescheduled

There will be no live provincial COVID-19 briefing today, even though the Royal St. John’s Regatta was postponed.

The briefing will instead go live on Friday, August 6 at 2 p.m. to avoid further conflict with the Regatta Day holiday.

Government will issue a news release with an update on the province’s COVID-19 situation at 2 p.m. this afternoon.

Adam Lidd (Audio to be added later)

Adam Lidd of Nain first learned how to mend fishing nets when he was 15 years old while fishing at Natsatuk, September Harbour.

Lidd started instructing how to make fishing nets on Monday August 2nd and will wrap up on Friday with three fishing nets completely made.

Susan Saksagiak and Mark Saksagiak are his trainees for this program.

Lidd adds that there are different types of nets that are made, there are char nets, cod traps, seal nets of different sizes for certain seals, shrimp trawls etc.

We will be speaking with Adam Lidd later in the PiusituKavut program to find out more.

Hopedale Rhubarb Festival

The 17th Annual Hopedale Rhubarb Festival started on July 24th and was postponed on the 27th, 2021.

The festival re-started this morning at 10am till 2pm with a Kushi find.

This event is for 6 years old’s and under, and 7-11 and 12 to 15 years of age and parents or caregivers are asked to accompany their children.

You are asked to bring your kushi’s to the Nanuk centre today at 2:15 pm for a count. Whoever caught the most kushis’ wins with first prize $100.00, second prize $75.00 and 3rd prize is $50.00

Tomorrow there will be rhubarb bake off and some mini fairs, and the cardboard boat races to follow

Nain Quick Stop Update

The Northwest Company opened up a convivence store in Nain called the Quick Stop, and has been in operation since March of 2017.

And right now, the store is currently closed, but we did get an further update.

We spoke with Max Gillingham who is Nain’s Northern Store Manager.

He says the Quick Stop will re-open on Thursday, August 5, 2021 and will be open from 5 to 9 pm for the time being, until a new manager arrives to Nain.

He says a former Quick Stop manager quit and left his position.

Gillingham added they are also short staffed at the Northern Store.

TRHA Update

Building supplies are now arriving on the Kamutik W to the north coast communities, for Torngat Regional Housing Association and also for Nunatsiavut Group of Companies, Nunatsiavut Construction who got the contract for construction.

William Lucy is the Coordinator for TRHA.

He says in Hopedale crews are back to work and repairing few homes of what was not finished last year.

Nunatsiavut Construction will also build for the one duplex in Nain and the other in Hopedale and are getting ready to get their crews together.

Lucy says two homes will build in Nain and one in Rigolet.

They are advertising for carpenters and labourer workers in Postville to renovate 3 homes from las year.

In Makkovik one home will be constructed, and right now the land lot is being worked on.

250th Anniversary

Plans for the 250th Nain Moravian Church Anniversary Celebrations is in the works.

Harry Dicker is the Community Economic Development Officer for the Nain Inuit Community Government and he is the main organizer for the Anniversary events.

He says the celebrations will be held just a week and 3 days from August 13th to the 15th.

So far, here’s the list of celebration events:

A community breakfast has been confirmed which will be sponsored by Smart Ice.

A parade around the community.

A community feast is being sponsored by the Ullapitsaijet Committee.

A slide show of pictures will be shown about the history of Nain.

And demonstrations of Inuit games.

Tom Gordon is a professor for the Emeritus School of Music with Memorial University, he will be in Nain to play the organ at the church.

The Nain Moravian Church will have their regular church service on Sunday and the Nain choir will be performing.

A fireworks display is also planned if the fireworks arrive in time for the celebrations.

There will also be door prizes sponsored by Smart Ice.

Dicker is also looking for musicians, 6 cooks, and some volunteers, so if you are interested in performing, being a cook or volunteering at this time please contact Harry Dicker at the NICG Office at 922 2842.

Delilah Saunders (Audio to be added later)

There will be a gathering in Happy Valley-Goose Bay at the Christian youth camp scheduled for August 13th, to the 15th.

Delilah Saunders of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the organizer of the gathering and this is for survivors of residential schools and their descendants as well as for missing and murdered women and indigenous girls.

Saunders says that there will be many activities held such as healing circles, canoeing, stories from elders, drumming and singing and other programming.

Saunders adds that travel costs will be provided by the Nunatsiavut Government, the Innu Nation, The Sealou, and NunatuKavut.
