Stanley Cup Playoffs

The Tampa Bay Lightning and the Colorado Avalanche are the last two NHL teams in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Their last game was played on Saturday, June 18, 2022.

The Avalanche team won the game against the Lightning team with the score of 7-0 on Saturday.

The next scheduled game will be tonight, June 20, starting at 8pm.

Rhubarb Festival

The schedule for the 16th annual Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale for July 11 to July 16, 2022.

Doris Boase is one of the organizers for this year’s Rhubarb Festival.

Throughout the week, there are different activities for all ages.

The festival will begin with a BBQ for the community and will end off with a fishing contest.

There will be Fear Factor, toddler’s social, cardboard boat race, bake off, a beauty pageant, lip syncing, bingo, fireman’s challenge, a dance, a strongman challenge, and a community bonfire.

There will be more updates as the festival approaches on what type of activities will be happening with possible requirements for the activities.

Postville Nominations Filled

The vacant seat in the Nunatsiavut Assembly for the Constituency of Postville was filled for the nominations.

We spoke with Nanette Blake who is the Nunatsiavut Elections Officer.

She says Diane Gear of Postville was nominated as the female candidate.

So, the election will be going ahead on Thursday June 23, 2022 from 8am to 8pm, located at the Postville Recreation Hall.

Blake adds that the regular polling day will be held on Thursday June 30, 2022.

The two candidates running are: George Gear and Diane Gear.

Blake says she will give another update once it becomes available.

President Extends Condolences to Respected Inuk Elder

On behalf of the Nunatsiavut Government and Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement, President Johannes Lampe today extended his heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of respected Nain Inuk elder Louisa Kojak, who passed away on Tuesday, June 14 at the age of 73.

“Ms.Kojak made tremendous contributions in helping to promote and preserve Inuktitut, having worked many years with both the Labrador Inuit Association and the Nunatsiavut Government in an administrative role and as an interpreter/translator. She provided administrative support during the process leading to the establishment of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement and played a significant role as interpreter/translator. She also helped in the development of the Inuktitut material to be used in the provincial education system. She was well known and respected in her home community of Nain and throughout Nunatsiavut and beyond. She will be sorely missed, but fondly remembered by those who were fortunate enough to have known her.”

Funeral services will take place this week in Nain.

Pride Walk (Audio)

June is the month of recognition for PRIDE and the Department of Health and Social Development (DHSD) in Nain held a pride walk last week.

Craig Wyatt is part of the mental health and addictions team.

The DHSD held the walk on June 15, 2022.

Wyatt says that this year’s participants was doubled compared to last year.

Award-Winning Volleyball Player Grace Tuglavina

An accomplished local athlete has just received a major national scholarship to help in her studies in the heath care field.

Award-winning volleyball player Grace Tuglavina, a recent graduate of Lake Melville school in Northwest River, Labrador is the winner of the RBC Indigenous youth scholarship.

The scholarship will provide Tuglavina, and each of 19 other recipients across Canada, with $10,000 dollars per year for up to four years to complete her studies.

Close to 800 Indigenous young people were considered for the annual award which recognizes strong academic performance and community involvement.

Tuglavina competed with Team NL Eastern elite volleyball, and team NL Indigenous at the North American Indigenous games.

She was named Lake Melville school’s female athlete of the year in 2021 and in 2020 received the school sports NL scholar athlete award.

She also won Gold at the 2021 Labrador, Western and Central Newfoundland Virtual science fair, as well as the Cenovus Energy Indigenous scholarship and the marine institute award in 2022 for a project on changing ice patterns in the North.

Removal of Building in Makkovik, NL

The Nunatsiavut Government is seeking tenders from qualified contractors to dismantle a 24×34 square foot building located at 13 Seaview Crescent in Makkovik. Bids to include the removal of the cement foundation.

Proposals are to be received no later than4:00 p.m ADT on July 6, 2022 at the Nunatsiavut Government offices in Makkovik, Nunatsiavut.

The lowest-cost or any tender may not necessarily be accepted and the Nunatsiavut Government reserves the right to cancel this tendering process at any time.

Tenders will be evaluated on the principle of value for money, which includes an evaluation of the Nuit content factors pursuant to the procurement act.

Postville By-Election

Nominations for candidates to fill a vacant seat in the Nunatsiavut Assembly for the Constituency of Postville closed at 2 p.m. today. George Gear was the only candidate to file nomination papers.

The Nunatsiavut Elections Act contains provisions to promote gender equity in the Nunatsiavut Assembly. As per Section 33(1) of the Act:

If, at the close of the time for nominating candidates … there is not at least one female candidate for election in each constituency, the Returning Officer shall immediately notify the President and the Nunatsiavut Electoral Officer in writing and the President shall take reasonable steps to nominate a female candidate for election in each constituency no later than 48 hours following the close of the time for nomination of candidates…

Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe has been contacted by the Nunatsiavut Electoral Officer and will undertake to nominate a female candidate as per the Act.

If no female candidate is nominated, Mr. Gear will be acclaimed as the Ordinary Member for Postville. If there is a female candidate, an election will take place on June 30, in accordance with the Act.

Tony Andersen Ordinary Member (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government held their elections for Ordinary Members at the Nunatsiavut House of Assembly in May.

Ordinary Members in Nunatsiavut were sworn in to represent our respective communities.

Last week we spoke with Ordinary Member Roxanne Andersen about her role and duties.

We also spoke with Tony Andersen, one of the two Ordinary Members for Nain.

He says that he is humble and very grateful to be elected for Nain.

Andersen adds that there is a lot of work to be done within our community of Nain.

Stanley Cup Championship 1st Game

The Stanley Cup Championship first game went ahead last night, Wednesday, June 15th which started at 9pm.

Colorado Avalanche beat their host the Tampa Bay Lightning team in overtime by a score of 4-3.

The teams will play again for the championship game on Saturday, June 18 at 9pm.
