Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe says he’s hopeful residential school survivors in Newfoundland and Labrador can now move on with their lives following Wednesday’s approval of a $50 million class-action settlement.
“We are pleased that residential schools survivors finally have some closure,” he says. “This ends a sad chapter in the history of Labrador Inuit, but it also represents a new beginning for many.”
In addition to the $50 million settlement, survivors will also receive $2 million for reconciliation and healing. The settlement was reached in May, but required the approval of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland and Labrador.
