President Leo Speaks On NG Claim Of NL Government’s Violation Of Land Claims Agreement

President Leo says that the Nunatsiavut Government cannot ignore the Province’s clear violation of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

According to an NG press release, President Leo made this statement while speaking at the NG Assembly in Hopedale this morning.

The NL Government and Vale recently amended the Voisey’s Bay Development Agreement.

Vale will provide an estimated $200 million in revenue to the NL Government as compensation for the amendment.

Vale will also contribute $30 million to community development initiatives.

Leo says that the NL Government has not provided NG with a full copy of the agreement.

Leo says that NG was “surprised and disturbed” that they were not consulted prior to the announcement of the agreement.

According to Leo, that is clearly a violation of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement.

Leo adds that she “won’t let this go. The Government of Newfoundland has to be held accountable; it has to honour our Land Claims Agreement; and it has to respect our government and our people. “
