Preparation Begins for Next Summer’s katilautta Festival

The festival season is just about over in Labrador.

A number of festivals have been hosted in Labrador communities from the Rhubarb Festival in Hopedale to the Beach Festival in North West River.

Nain has been the only community in Nunatsiavut that hasn’t hosted a festival this year.

That’s because the community hosts their katilautta Music Festival every two years.

Fundraising has already begun for next summer’s celebration of music.

Sarah Karpik, one of the festival’s committee members, says they’re hoping to put on quite the show.

She says they got an early start on fundraising to ensure that they’re able to provide the best entertainment possible.

Performers from throughout Labrador and other Inuit regions have performed for the festival’s crowd in the past.

The price tag for the last katilautta was about $20, 000.

Karpik says they’ll begin to recruit more committee members in the near future to help make 2013’s katillautta one to remember.
