Pauktuutit Surveying How Youth Use Social Media

Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada wants to look at how Inuit youth use social media to find out how the organization can do better outreach and violence prevention.

As part of its Makilirit Rise Up project, Pauktuutit, in collaboration with researchers from Carleton and Western universities, has launched a survey targeted at Inuit aged 18 to 25, to find out more about how they use Facebook.

The survey includes 27 questions about how people use the social media site, including the frequency and purpose of using it, and the status of their internet connection.

Other questions include: “Have you ever added as a Facebook friend someone you didn’t know personally?” and “Have you ever had a bad experience on social media?”

“The benefit to you of filling out this survey is that it may make you think about your Facebook use and online safety,” Pauktuutit says in the opening page of the survey.

“Your participation will also help Pauktuutit create Facebook information aimed at Inuit youth about issues like preventing violence and getting help.”

The results of the study will be published in a report and in academic articles, but participants’ names will not be used.

Pauktuutit will also share the information with other Inuit organizations.

Youth can fill out the survey at www.pauktuutit.ca.
