Nutrition North Holds Public Session (Audio)

Representatives from the Nutrition North Canada program held an information session in Nain this past Tuesday.

Stephen Van Dine is the Director General for Devolution and Territorial Relations with Aboriginal Affairs and Northern Development Canada and Michelle Wood sits on the Advisory Board for Labrador.

They say they realize that the cost of food here in Nain is very expensive.

Van Dine says there are three stores in Nain who have applied for the Nutrition North subsidy.

Big Land, Northern and Jacquie’s Convenience are subsidized with the Nutrition North Program.

Van Dine mentions that he understands that although foods are subsidized, Labrador operates much differently than other parts of the country.

Furthermore, he and Michelle Woods say that there are two levels of subsidies.

One level covers the more nutritious and perishable items, while the other subsidy covers foods that are not as healthy.
