National Aboriginal Day Planned for Makkovik

The government of Canada has declared June 21 to be National Aboriginal Day.

It’s a time to honor the cultures of Inuit, Métis, and first nation populations throughout Canada.

The town of Makkovik planned a meeting on May 2nd to get the community together and organize this celebration.

Cathy Ford is the Community Health worker for the Department of Health and Social Development in Makkovik.

She says that the people who showed up at that meeting from different organizations were formed into a committee.

There are a total of 13 people in the committee, including Ford.

Due to the community events on the week of June 17, Makkovik will celebrate their Aboriginal Day on June 26.

They brainstormed ideas and made up a schedule for that day.

Ford adds that the next meeting will be sometime in June, closer to the day of the event.
