Nain Community Enhancement Program Underway

The Nain Inuit Community Government has received funds for the Community Employment Enhancement Program.

Dasi Ikkusek is the Town Manager.

She says council has received $15,000 for the project.

That amount is not much to hire a lot of people who need more hours to qualify for their Employment Insurance Benefits for the winter.

Ikkusek says they are hiring 7 people to start the project, and they started work this morning.

Two or three of the people working under the project will make a flat with an elder instructor, who will teach them for a period of 4 weeks.

Ikkusek says building a flat is something new, as there are only a few people left who do make them.

She says the project will include some people making more garbage boxes and graveyard headstone crosses.

A few may also be making craft items.

Ikkusek says some of the people hired need hours ranging from 43 to 227.

She adds that this year’s project is different, in that the maximum amount of hours that can be worked is 400, not 420 like before.

The new workers will be on the job from 8am to 5pm through the week.
