A Request for Proposals for new vessels was announced a month ago by the Department of Transportation and Works of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Minister Paul Davis is responsible for the department.
He says the Request for Proposals, or RFPs, are for combination passenger/freight vessels.
The proposals will be issued soon.
Minister Davis says the Provincial Government is seeking a single contract for all Labrador Ferries service.
He says a contractor or company will take three years to build a vessel.
Davis says until the new vessels are in place, the Astron and Northern Ranger will continue to serve the north coast of Labrador.
