Meeting Held on Problems with Fishing in Nain Bay (Meeting Audio)

Nain community members were told at a meeting the other night that fishing in Nain Bay will not be banned.

That was according to Nunatsiavut Government’s Director of Renewable Resources, Todd Broomfield, and other officials in attendance.

Broomfield, along with the Senior Area Representative for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Labrador, Wayne King, Torngat Fish Producers Co-Op Manager Keith Watts, and Torngat Fish Producers Co-Op Assistant Manager Ron Johnson, held a meeting in Nain in the boardroom of the Nunatsiavut building Tuesday evening.

Broomfield said the gathering was held because they had been hearing concerns about fishing going on in Nain Bay.

The meeting was well-attended, mainly because a rumour was circulating that fishing in Nain Bay was going to be shut down.

Community members at the meeting were divided in their opinions of whether or not overfishing is taking place at Nain Bay.

Many community members, including Nain AngajukKak Joe Dicker, stated that much more research was needed to support the theory that a ban is necessary.

Dicker, addressing the officials running the meeting, also stated that they’ve taken away their caribou, so don’t take away their char.

Broomfield added that there are no plans to impose a limit on the amount of char that community fisher people can catch.
