Japanese Research Team Visiting Nain

A Japanese research team is visiting Nain.

They are setting up a research project, PWING, to measure and photograph light emissions and cosmic rays in the atmosphere, including the Northern lights.

The team is headed by Kazuo Shiokawa, Ph.D., a Professor, and Director of CICR and Kagashima Observatory.

He is joined here by Masahito Nose, Ph.D, from the World Data Center for Geomagnetism at Kyoto University, and Yuki Obana, Ph.D., a Lecturer with the Department of Engineering Science, at Osaka Electro-Communication University.

Katsuki Nish, a student of Shiokawa’s at Nagoya University, rounds out the group.

The team is meeting with Nain AngajukKak Joe Dicker this afternoon to discuss setting up their project at Trouser Lake.

They are hoping to meet with Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe this afternoon as well.

The PWING project is scheduled to run for 5 years.

It consists of eight locations in total.

Other locations, beside the proposed project here in Nain, include Russia, Finland and Iceland.

The team has enjoyed their experience here, and especially enjoyed sampling local arctic char.

They have been here since Sept 18, 2016, and are scheduled to fly back to Goose Bay tomorrow morning.
