Cleanup at Voisey’s Bay Nearly Complete

The cleanup of the spill at Voisey’s Bay is nearly complete.

Bob Carter is a Spokesperson for Vale in Newfoundland and Labrador.

He says the cleaning of the leaked tailings has already been complete.

Carter says the cleanup effort ran smoothly.

The only work left to do now is aesthetic work on the area of the spill.

Crews will be placing topsoil over the coverage area.

Seeding and the planting will also be carried out on the area.

A leak in one of the tailings lines at the site released an amount of tailings covering an area of around 600 cubic metres.

Carter says regulators from the provincial government recently visited the site.

They are currently finalizing a status report.

That report will be submitted to the Voisey’s Bay Environmental Management Board.

The board has representation from the federal, provincial and Nunatsiavut governments.

Carter says they will continue to monitor the area where the spill occurred.
