Cause of Mysterious Seal Deaths Still Unknown (Audio)

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans is still trying to establish a reason for the mysterious deaths of seals this past winter.

Gary Stenson is a Researcher with the Department.

He says they still haven’t established a reason for the deaths.

From 200-300 dead seals washed up along the shores from the Strait of Belle Isle all the way to Hopedale between December and January.

Stenson says they haven’t had any similar cases in Labrador this spring.

About a half a dozen seals did wash up along the shores of the Avalon Peninsula recently.

Stenson says they will conduct tests on the most recent carcasses.

The seals from the Avalon were found in a better condition than those that were found in Labrador.

Stenson says they hope to find a cause of death in these samples.
