2014 Income Tax Deadline Extended

Have you filed your 2014 income tax return yet?

According to the Government of Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), you still have time to file- until May 5, 2015.

On April 24, the CRA issued a communication to some Canadians that referred to an incorrect filing deadline for 2014 income tax and benefit returns of May 5, 2015, rather than April 30, 2015.

According to the CRA, the CRA takes full responsibility for the error and their first priority is to ensure that no Canadian is negatively affected.

As a result, and at Minister Kerry Lynne Findlay’s request, 2014 income tax and benefit returns filed by midnight on May 5, 2015, will not incur interest or penalties.

The CRA sincerely regrets and apologizes for any confusion this may have caused.

Important due dates to remember to file your income tax:

On May 5, income tax returns are due for all but self employed workers and their spouses or common-law partners.

Amounts owing for 2014 are due for all taxpayers who owe.

June 15 is the due date for returns for self employed workers and their spouses or common-law partners.

If you file your return late, your GST/HST credit, Canada child tax benefit payments, and old age security benefit payments may be delayed.

Outstanding balances paid after May 5, 2015, may be subject to penalties and interest.
