Arts And Crafts On The Coast Update

Torngat Arts and Crafts Incorporated in Nain is looking for more sealskin products.

Peggy Andersen is the Executive Director and Peter Dicker is the Shop Manager.

Andersen says the craft items that are presently in the craft centre are carvings, jewellery, knitted and crocheted items, and sealskin slippers.

There has been a demand for larger sizes for men’s and women’s sealskin slippers and moose hide boots.

Andersen says when the tourists arrived this summer, they were mainly looking for soapstone and bone earrings and mitts.

She added Torngat Arts and Crafts Inc. consists of 9 board members.

In Rigolet, Ashley Shiwak is the Tourism Manager.

She says the crafts people there are doing well.

Shiwak says they are trying to do an upgrade on the craft items and install more shelves in the shop to have more room for displays.

She says they are looking at getting more craft projects on the go when additional funding is approved.

They try to employ a supervisor and 3 craft producers to do 2 or 3 projects a year.

Shiwak adds that if more funding is granted, they hope to do an upgrade in the interior and exterior of the craft shop building.
