Aboriginal Day Celebrations Taking Place on North Coast

Aboriginal day celebrations will be held tomorrow in all of the Nunatsiavut Communities on the north coast.

In Nain, celebrations will begin tomorrow with a fishing contest, and a prize will be given out to the fisher who gets the largest fish.

Judging for this event will begin at 3:30 at the ball field.

Also in Nain at 4 pm, there will be an opening prayer and proclamation.

At 4:15, a community feast will begin with soup and panitsiaks.

At 5 pm there will be traditional games following a judging of the best traditional dresses for all age groups.

In Postville, there will be a potluck starting at 5:30 at the Community Center.

There will be music, native games and prizes for the events.

In Rigolet, a sunrise ceremony will be held. At 3 pm, games and snacks will be served with flummies and bake apple and red berry jam.

At 4:30, the Nunatsiavut flag will be raised, and the Nunatsiavut anthem will be sung.

A recital of the Lord ’s Prayer, a performance by the Atsanik drummers, and speeches by the AngajukKâk Jack Shiwak and NG Minister Daryl Shiwak will follow.

There will be a traditional feast at 5 pm.

There will also be prizes for traditional dress and traditional food.

At 6 pm a square dance and a karaoke will be the closing events.

In Makkovik, there will be a breakfast starting at 7:30; DHSD will be serving eggs, bacon, sausage, toast, cereal, tea, coffee and juice.

Between 10 and 11, there will be a traditional mug up with tea and coffee served with panitsiak.

The Nunatsiavut government will be having an open house and they will be having a barbecue thereafter.
