MHA Edmunds Says Ferry Delivery Date Questionable

Randy Edmunds, the Opposition MHA responsible for Labrador and Aboriginal Affairs, says the 2016 delivery date for two Labrador ferries is questionable.

In the House of Assembly yesterday, Edmunds asked the Minister of Transportation and Works why an extension was requested on awarding the tender for the ferry service.

Edmunds says the fact that the Request for Proposals and tendering process has been going on for over a year is “completely unacceptable.“

According to Edmunds, the tender process was originally scheduled to close in April 2014, but was extended to June 2014.

And now the tendering process has been extended to June 12, 2015.

Edmunds says the latest delay in awarding a contract puts into question the promised delivery date of September 2016.

Edmunds adds new ferries for the North Coast of Labrador and the Strait of Belle Isle are desperately needed, given the constant disruptions in the current service due to difficult ice conditions.
