2011 Polar Bear Season Was One for the Record Books

The 2011 polar bear season will go down as one for the record books.

The full quota of 11 bears was reached this past season.

Carl McLean is the Deputy Minister of Lands and Natural Resources for the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says 10 of the 11 bears harvested this year were done so by hunters.

The remaining one license was used as an emergency kill.

The kill involved an incident where a polar bear had to be shot after breaking into a cabin.

The encounter took place at Black Island, an area outside of Nain, in mid-June.

This year’s quota was much higher than the previous year’s six polar bears.

McLean says the provincial government allowed for the transfer of five licenses from 2010’s season.

Only one polar bear was harvested that season.

The Deputy Minister says the Nunatsiavut Government will continue to pursue an increased quota from the province.

He says the success of this year’s hunt provides ammo for the request.

McLean believes the request is also backed by information gathered through science and traditional knowledge.

The provincial government is expected to decide upon 2012’s polar bear quota this fall.
