Fire Safety Day 7

Short days and long nights mark the arrival of the holiday season in Newfoundland and Labrador. Safely deal with the chilly winter weather by taking these precautions:

Heating

  • When using a space heater, inspect the cord and ensure it is not damaged; Always plug a space heater directly into an outlet and do not use an extension cord;
  • Always keep at least one metre of space around a space heater and never leave a space heater running in an unoccupied room;
  • Never dry shoes or clothes by placing them on a heater or wood stove;
  • Ensure no flammable materials, especially paint and gasoline, have been stored near your source of heating; and
  • Always supervise children and pets around sources of heat.

Winter hazards

  • Never use an appliance that burns fuel inside as this will generate deadly carbon monoxide. Equip your home with carbon monoxide detectors;
  • Only operate a generator in a clean, dry, well-ventilated area;
  • Never use any open-flame device to thaw a frozen pipe. Call a licensed plumber;
  • Clear snow from all exterior entrances of your home which are your means of escape in the event of a fire or an emergency.
  • Check on seniors or other residents in your neighbourhood who may need assistance with clearing entrances to their homes of snow and materials;
  • Equip your car with an emergency kit; and
  • Prepare a 72-hour emergency kit for your home.

Information regarding general emergency preparedness is available at getprepared.gc.ca.

Nunatsiavut says cease all harvesting of George River caribou

Media Release: Nunatsiavut Government is pleased to see Indigenous Groups from Quebec agreeing with our Government’s call for a ban on all harvesting of the George River Caribou Herd.

Tony Andersen is the Lands and Natural Resources Minister.

He says “Caribou is a part of our culture identity which has helped to sustain our people for thousands of years as valuable source of food, clothing and tools.

However we reached a point where the George River Caribou herd is struggling to survive and sacrifices have to be made if there is to be any hope of recovery.”

A census carried out this summer 2018 estimates the herd is at 5,500 animals, a 38% decline from 2016. The results came back a shock.

Andersen says “never did we think the decline would be as much as it was, and we can only attribute it to continued harvesting acitivies.”

Nunatsiavut Government held multiple meetings with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, the Innu Nation and NunatuKavut Community Council leading up to and following the release of the census results.

He goes on to say “during all of our meetings we firmly stated that we believe there should be no harvesting whatsoever from the George River Caribou Herd, we stand by that position.”

Minister Andersen is urging all Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement to adhere to the Provincial harvesting Moratorium on George River Caribou. He is also renewing calls for stricter enforcement measures.
