Master Apprentice Instructor

The Master Apprentice Inuktitut Program will be going ahead again soon in Nain.

Shirley Jararuse is the Language Program Cordinator for the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism with Nunatsiavut Government.

She says Nancy Ikkusek will be returning to teach an Individual for a 5 week term.

The date is yet to be finalized for when the program begin.

Hebron Family Archaeology session

The Hebron Meeting will be going ahead today, Friday February 15th at 3pm at the JS centre immediately following senior’s bingo.

She says everyone is welcome to join and discuss ways to share information collected during the Hebron Family Archaeology Project, and to discuss long-term plans for Hebron.

There will be snacks and soup served.

Nain Festival Days

The upcoming Nain Festival Days at the Moravian Church for this month and March 2019 are as follows:

Tuesday, February 19 th – Moravian Church Anniversary Day.

Thursday, February 28 th- Married Couples Day.

Sunday, March 3 rd – Estomichi.

Wednesday, March 6 th – Young Women’s Day, and it will also Beginning of Ash Wednesday.

We will also have more of the upcoming Nain Festival Days beginning of April.

the Empowering indigenous women extended

The Nunatsiavut Government will be holding Empowering Indigenous Woman for stronger Community’s Workshops.

Tracy-Ann Evans is the Status of Women Coordinator for the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says that they are looking for peer facilitators in Nain.

The peer facilitator positions have been extended; so if you would like to be a part of this and would like to help change the face of mental health and violence against women.

This workshop was rescheduled due to weather conditions.

This project is one that address two very important topics that they are dealing
Within our indigenous communities on a daily basis: Violence against women and Mental Health and Wellness.

Nain Transition House Contest

The Nain Transition House Inc. is holding a contest to name the new building which is located at Alakkatik Road.

The name must support one of the following:
Must reflect the vision of the Nain Transition House where all women with or without children live a life free from abuse and or:
Must be named after an object that symbolizes strength or the empowerment of women, or
Must be named after a woman who is , was an advocate for women in our community
Or must be named named in memory of a female community member and must culturally relevant.

To be eligible to participate must be a Nain resident, names in both Inuktitut and English is accepted.

The deadline to submit is Monday, February 25 at 4pm.

The winner will be announced onMonday, March 25 she will receives $250.00.

Hopedale Photo contest

In Hopedale a photo contest is going ahead for Hopedale residents.

We spoke with Eileen Flowers who is the Vice Principal with Amos Comenius Memorial School.

She says this photo contest is open to only Hopedale residents.

The ACMS is putting together a cultural photo contest for the residents in Hopedale; they are currently looking for any submissions for photos.

The selected photos will be showcased throughout the ACM School.

To submit your photos you must be from Hopedale, and you can only submit in 5 photos per person.

The photos must be either about Hopedale culture, landscapes of the community, traditional way of life or any creative shots will also be accepted.

The winning photos will be developed on a canvas and hung up at the ACM School with their name on the plaque and recognition.

Deadline to submit your photos are February 28, 2019.

Also during the Teen Rockers program tomorrow we will interview Eileen Flowers about what activities are being held at the ACM School and about the photo contest during our teen rockers program.

PSSSP Deadline for funding

The Deadline to apply for funding and to renew your application for the 2019/2020 academic year for Post Secondary Students Program and for Inuit Pathways Program is Friday March 1st, 2019.

Jodie Lane is the Education Manager with PSSP with Nunatsiavut.

She says if you wish to be considered for any funding to attend to any post secondary studies during the 2019/2020 academic year you must complete the application form.

Forms and applications must be submitted to their offices by no later than 4:30pm on March 1, 2019.

She says applications received after this date will not be considered until all on time applications and renewals are processed.

Lane says don’t delay, complete your application forms and send It in now.

Hebron Workshop

The Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism will be holding another Hebron workshop this week.

Michelle Davies is the Archeology Assistant with the Nunatsiavut Government.

This workshop will help to determine the best way to share information from the Hebron Family Archaeology project.

This is to determine community priorities for a long term plan for Hebron.

Everyone is welcome to attend to this Hebron workshop.

This workshop will be held at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Center at 3pm this Thursday February 14, after the senior’s bingo.

There will also be a draw for a prize after the workshop and soup will be served.

Trail markers

The Nain Inuit Community Government put out four positions for Trail markers for the upcoming winter trail.

The deadline to apply for the trail marker positions was January 17th, 2019.

The Nain Inuit Community Government was looking to hire four people to mark the trail between the communities of Nain and Natuashish.

Beni Ittulak, is the Town Manager for Nain says they’ve hired four people who have already painted the markers last week.

She said that the four people who are hired are separated into 2 teams; 1 team who will be working for the remainder of this winter, and Team 2 who is hired to help set up the markers and hauling them up this coming Spring. But will also be available for back up.

Community Employment Enhancement Program

The Community Employment Enhancement Program is still on the go in Postville.

Shirley Goudie is the Town Manager.

She said they have one employee working on crafts and another one helping elder’s with chopping wood, the two are almost finished getting hours in.

Goudie said there are some people that still need more hours to work, but where there is just about couple weeks left for this program, they wouldn’t have enough time to qualify for their hours.

She says they are waiting on getting approved for their knitting program and are approved from Inuit Pathways to hire anyone on a Work Experience Program for 16 weeks.
