B&J Tournament

The 18th Annual Bernard and Jeffrey Webb Memorial hockey tournament will go ahead this weekend at the Nain Husky Centre.

The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 6:30pm on Friday, March 1st.

We’ve contacted Lisa Ivany who is the Recreation Director for Nain.

She says there will be 7 teams altogether including 3 from out of town, in this year’s tournament with some having a maximum of 13 people.

The teams registered right now is a Team from Makkovik, a team from Natuashish and five Nain teams – The Warriors, The Red Cats, The Harris Team, Team Locals, and Gracie Team.

Ivany also added that anyone wanting a table to sell anything during the tournament can contact her or Crystal Allen.

The admission to enter the B&J Tournament will be $1 for 5 and up.

2019 Youth Symposium

The 25th annual youth symposium will be held in Hopedale this year.

We spoke with Cassie Jararuse the Regional Youth Services Program Coordinator with Nunatsiavut Government.

Jararuse says this year the symposium will be held on March 7-11 2019.

Hopedale Photo contest

In Hopedale a photo contest is going ahead for Hopedale residents.

We spoke with Eileen Flowers who is the Vice Principal with Amos Comenius Memorial School.

She says this photo contest is open to only Hopedale residents.

The ACMS is putting together a cultural photo contest for the residents in Hopedale; they are currently looking for any submissions for photos.

The selected photos will be showcased throughout the ACM School.

To submit your photos you must be from Hopedale, and you can only submit in 5 photos per person.

The photos must be either about Hopedale culture, landscapes of the community, traditional way of life or any creative shots will also be accepted.

The winning photos will be developed on a canvas and hung up at the ACM School with their name on the plaque and recognition.

Deadline to submit your photos are February 28, 2019.

New TB Nurse in Nain

The Nunatsiavut Government and the Inuit Tapariit Kanadami (ITK) identified a need to implement a TB Public Health Nurse in Nain.

We spoke with Megan Hudson the new TB Public Nurse that was hired for Nain.

Hudson says she was hired for her new position in January of this year.

She was hired on due to the recent TB outbreak that happened in Nain in 2018 and prior.

Hudson will be engaged to help and support the community.

She has her own office located downstairs at the Department of Health and Social Development.

TB Research Study

The Nunatsiavut Government Department of Health and Social Development are in partnership with the Memorial University Faculty of Medicine to learn more about the TB issue in Nain and Hopedale.

Due to the TB outbreak in 2018 they are focusing on residents of Nain and Hopedale.

We spoke with Megan Hudson the TB Public Health Nurse in Nain.

She says there is a TB Research study going on in both communities.

The TB sharing circle is scheduled for tonight here in Nain at the DHSD building starting at 6:30pm.

But, due to poor weather, this sharing circle may have to be postponed if the flights don’t get to Nain.

They are looking for community members to take part in this TB sharing circle.

Snacks and food will be available and participants who attend will receive a Gift Certificate.

Paul Fenton

Paul Fenton is the avalanche technician in Nain.

And he was in our studio this morning to give some information about safety tips on avalanche and what you can do to prevent one.

He has been living in Nain for 21 years.

And every day he is out there conducting information about what the causes are and how to prevent them.

Part of 47th Combined Councils AGM

The Combined Councils of Labrador held their 47 th Annual General Meeting in Goose bay couple weeks ago.

Joe Dicker, AngajukKak of the Nain Inuit Community Government attended the meeting.

He says he mainly concentrated on the issues regarding Northern Labrador and within Nunatsiavut.

Dicker says the main topics were health and transportation issues.

He says he brought up the issue on the Nain Airstrip and the new vessel that will be serving the North Coast Communities this summer.

47th Combined Councils of Labrador Part Two

The Combined Councils of Labrador 47th Annual General Meeting was held in Goose Bay over two weeks ago.

Joe Dicker, AngajukKak of the Nain Inuit Community Government attended the meeting.

He says the other issue he spoke about was Labrador Grenfell Health, that concerns all Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries.

2019 Youth Symposium

This year the annual youth symposium will be held in Hopedale.

We spoke with Cassie Jararuse the Regional Youth Services Program Coordinator with Nunatsiavut Government.

Jararuse says this year the symposium will be held on March 7-11 2019.

They have five youth from each of the north coast communities who will be attending and youth from North West River and Happy Valley Goose Bay.

They are currently looking for one youth from the Canadian constituency.

Ages to attend the symposium are 15 to 30 years.

The deadline is today, Wednesday February 27, 2019 at 4:30pm.

Jararuse says this year’s theme will be land base programs and how our culture on the land is the best healing.

Adam Lidd

It is always good to hear stories from the Elders.

Adam Lidd is an Elder from Nain.

He says in the winter time, he was always told how to watch the weather before going off hunting.

Lidd says there used to be a lot of snow in them days.

Also, he will tell a story on Snow house making as well.
