Embroidery MacMillian

The Tradition and Transition in partnership with the Nunatsiavut Government and the Memorial University held open meetings about their project on embroidery.

We spoke to Katie Donlan and her crew from the MacMillian Museum.

She says they traveled to each community to get feedback from people in the community about the embroidery.

Their last stop was in Nain on April 15, 2019.

They had the opportunity to meet with individuals and to show case the well made embroidery work.

Interpreter/Translator

The OKâlaKatiget Society is looking for an individual who is able to provide translations, interpretation on an as needed, call-in basis.

OK Radio is looking for an individual who is bilingual in Inuttitut and English.

The duties include: ability to translate and interpret interviews and briefs.

You must have knowledge in the standardized writing system, and you must be able to read and write in Inuttitut for translations.

If you are able to interpret from English to Inuttitut this is a great opportunity for you to become an interpreter.

Nain Minor Hockey

The Nain Midget Redcats recently competed in the Hockey NL in Stevensville during Easter break.

Brent Dennistion is the Assistance Coach and Chaperon.

He says they travelled to Stephenville on Sunday April 21.

And the Tournament began that day and ran until April 24th.

Denniston says the Midgets Minor hockey Team the Torngat Mountain Redcats placed fourth overall out of 6 teams.

The team consisted of 10 players from Nain and 4 players who joined from Natuashish.

Denniston says the Nain midgets were practising every week since January and holding practises.

They held a lot of fundraising to make this trip possible.

Big thank you to the Nain Fire Department, Nain Recreation Department, The Ullapitsaijet and for parents of the hockey players who help fundraise and to make this trip possible.

This year the First place team went to the Southern Shore, second place went to Port of Basque and third place went to Glover Town.

He adds over all the experience was good, teams players played really well and competed hard and it was a good experience.

Easter Games

The Easter Games is just about done for the year here in Nain.

There will be Adult Evening Events starting at 7pm at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

There will be Minute to Win It, Beauty Pageant, and a few other games such as Lemon Game, Pie Eating, Bunny Drawing (feet), Smarties Race, and Flipper Relay Race.

For the Minute to Win It, the first 20 people will play. There will be a $10 fee.

The Elimination round will be until 1 person is left and the Final Round person must complete in 10 events to win a prize.

The Minimum prize is $200.00 and the Maximum prize is $500.00.

For the Beauty Pageant, there must be 10 people registered to start.

1st prize is $300, 2nd prize is $200, and 3rd place is $100.

Tomorrow evening is the Awards night at the JSCC at 7pm.

Also tomorrow evening to end of the Easter Games, there will be Family Fireworks at the Nain Harbour at 7pm.

MHA elections

The 2019 provincial general election will take place on Thursday, May 16, 2019.

This year marks the 48th General Assembly was dissolved on April 17, 2019.

A General Election will take place on May 16, 2019.

Lela Evans from Makkovik is running for MHA.

We spoke with her to find out what her main issues are and what she wants to bring to her constituencies.

The following key dates apply to this election: Election Day will be Thursday, May 16.

Polls will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m.

Advance Poll will be held on Thursday, May 9.

Them Days Magazine

The Them Days magazine in Happy Valley Goose Bay has a lot planned for the spring season.

Amy Chaulk is the Editor for Them Days Inc.

She says they are working on two stories on Birch Island and Labrador Veterans.

Chaulk says they also will be having their Annual General Meeting in May of this year.

NGC scholarship

The Nunatsiavut Group of Companies (NGC) are providing scholarship packages to beneficiates from the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement to help assist students.

Sarah Leo is the Vice President of NGC Development.

NGC realizes the importance of education and of providing opportunities to assist beneficiaries in the pursuit of their goals and careers.

Four scholarships of a $1250 will be given out to students who are enrolled in Business, Marine, Construction Trades and women in business marine filed or trades.

Applicants must be enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution in the field of business, business administration, science, law, engineering or computer studies.

Requirements to apply for funding are as follows: You must be a beneficiary of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims.

Students must be enrolled at an accredited post secondary institution, or a professional development or recognized trade school/community college and have successfully completed at least one semester/block.

Enrolled full time, part time may be taken into consideration for some trades training or apprenticeships.

Scholarship applications must be accompanied by a Transcript for the year or the block completed, two separate signed letters of reference, one from a community leaders and one from a teacher, instructor or supervisor.

She says the deadline to apply is May 31, at 11:59 pm.

Easter Games

Today, April 26, 2019 marks Day five of this year’s Easter Games here in Nain.

The day started at 10am was Movie Day for ages 0-4 at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

There was another movie started at 1pm, playing “How to train your dragon 3” for ages 5-12. Popcorn, juice, pop, chips, and bars will be for sale.

At 7pm at the JSCC there will be Pool Tournament, open to both male and female players, $20 per player, and $10 for JHMS Students.

The 1st, 2nd and 3rd prizes for the Pool Tournament will consist of $250, $150, and $75.

During the pool tournament there will also be the 1st Annual Martin R Jararuse Easter Dart Tournament for ages 16 yrs and up.

Each team must consist of 6 players, 3 men and 3 women, $10 a player, winners will get $80 per player for 1st, 2nd place will get $50 per player, and 3rd place will get $30 per player.

Tomorrow Saturday, April 27, starting at 10am will be Children’s Inuit Games.

At 1pm, will be Adult’s Ice Games. Anyone wanting to play must bring your own saw, axe, and chainsaw.

Depending on the ice conditions, there will also be skidoo races at the Nain Harbour at 1pm. All participants must wear a helmet.

According to the Recreation Department, the Target Shooting is re-scheduled to Saturday due to bad weather forecast for Sunday, April 28.

Starting at 5pm Recreation will be holding Giant Bingo with cards selling for $100 at the Nain Husky Centre, $200 games, and jackpot to go of $5000.

There will also be a Game #11 put in play, $10 per card, and winner takes 75% of earnings.
At 9pm at the Atsanik Lodge, the Flummies will be performing, $10 admission.

On Sunday, April 28 will be Community Breakfast at 9am at the JS followed by a Sliding Party outside the building. Hot chocolate and panitsiat will be served.

At 7pm will be Adults Evening Events at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre with the Dancing Motorcycle Rave Competition and points will be awarded for costume.

The prizes for the dance competition will consist of $300, $200, and $100.

And at the end of the night, you must be there to win a Mystery Door Prize Draw.

NIHB

The Non-Insured Health Benefits (NIHB) program is a national program that pays for some or all of the costs of medical, dental, and pharmacy services that are NOT covered by any other health plans for eligible First Nations and Inuit.

Jennifer Best the NIHB Manager located at the Regional office in Happy Valley Goose Bay.

Best says since April 1 NIHB now cover repairs for your eyeglasses, about 20 percent.

And in recent months they are providing a few new accommodations for patients who travel to HVGB for medical reasons.

Last fall they had a new dental fee upgrade which has increased.
