The 10th Annual CYN and Mr Volleyball Tournament took place this past weekend in Nain at the Jeremias Sillett Community Centre.

Yvonne Jones Part 2 (audio English Only)

The Government of Canada is committed to supporting Inuit-led efforts to eliminate tuberculosis in Inuit Nunangat, as well as the factors that contribute to the spread of the disease, including inadequate housing, food insecurity, and poverty.

Yvonne Jones the MP for the Canadian politician for Inuit descent in Newfoundland and Labrador.

She says last year the Government of Canada and Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami announced a commitment to eliminate tuberculosis across Inuit Nunangat by 2030, and reduce active TB by at least 50 percent by 2025.

Postville soccer little league

The Postville Department of Health and Social Development are now holding children’s Soccer in their community.

Kayla Andersen is the Community Health Worker with DHSD.

Andersen says she started the minor soccer in Postville a few years ago and completed the Soccer coaching clinic in Happy Valley Goose Bay.

This is for children who are in grades kindergarten to grade 6.

And soccer will be held every Monday evenings from 7pm.

She also added a new age group called the “little league” this is for children for ages 5 and under.

Children under the age of 3 must be accompanied by an adult, and children must bring their own sneakers.

The recreation department is helping this year, at the Rec center.

This will take place every Monday evenings.

The Little league starts from 6-7 pm and the older age group is from 7-8pm.

No registration needed to register your child.

Nain Grads

The OKâlaKatiget Society has a job opening as a Full-time, Permanent Receptionist.

Under the supervision of the Administrative Accountant, the receptionist co-ordinates the front end reception area.

Applicants must require:

• Some knowledge of Microsoft Word Programs
• Willingness to learn features of the Security Cameras and monitor surveillance videos if required
• Fluency in English and Inuktitut is a definite asset

Rate of pay will be starting at $15 per hour with a 35 hour work week.

Call in Interpreter/Translator

The OKâlaKatiget Society is looking for an individual who is able to provide translations, interpretation on an as needed, call-in basis.

OK Radio is looking for an individual who is bilingual in Inuttitut and English.

The duties include: ability to translate and interpret interviews and briefs.

You must have knowledge in the standardized writing system, and you must be able to read and write in Inuttitut for translations.

If you are able to interpret from English to Inuttitut this is a great opportunity for you to become an interpreter.

CYN & Mr. Volleyball Tournament

The 10th Annual CYN and Mr. Volleyball Tournament will be held in Nain this weekend.

Deadline to register teams was yesterday May 1.

Gwen Dyson is one of the organizers for the tournament this year.

The tournament will start tomorrow Friday May 3.

She says they have seven women’s teams and five men teams registered.

Teams paid a registration fee; $20 per player and $15 for students who are still in school.

Dyson says they have one women’s team from Hopedale, one women’s and one men’s team from Natuashish.

Coastal Grad dates

The Grad students are very busy with preparing for their special day.

We contacted schools from the north coast.

Students of the BL Morrison School in Postville are preparing for their Graduation.

The Cap and Gown will be held on May 16 and the Graduation will be on May 17 of this year.

There are three students graduating this year and the theme will be, “Oh the places we’ll go”.

The Graduation ceremony, Prom, and Cap and Gown for this year in Rigolet will be held on May 25th.

They have 2 grad students who will be graduating, and their theme is “Travel”.

In Hopedale the Graduation ceremony and the Cap and Gown ceremony will be taking place on Saturday June 1.

Dean Coombs the Principal at the Amos Comenius School in Hopedale.

He says nine students will be graduating this year, one female and eight male.

And their grad theme this year is “Vegas”.

Students head to their church service at 2pm then get their pictures done, then go to the reception and return to the school for their meal and ceremony.

Amalia McNeil the Clerk for the J.C. Erhardt Memorial School in Makkovik.

She says they don’t have any students who will be graduating this year.

Near Makkovik Plane Crash

One person is dead after a plane crash and harrowing ground search on Labrador’s North Coast.

The man’s body has made it to Happy Valley-Goose Bay, along with the second man who is now in hospital therefore being treated for serious injuries.

The plane crashed into the side of a mountain near Makkovik on Wednesday morning, May 1st. Blizzard conditions hampered rescue efforts and prevented a Cormorant helicopter from landing near the site.

A ground search and rescue team consisting of nine people from Makkovik reached the two men by snowmobile on Wednesday evening. At the time, one was conscious while another was unconscious.

They reached Makkovik around 9 p.m., but couldn’t get a helicopter out until early Thursday morning due to weather.

The plane had come from Sept-Iles, Quebec, and was heading for Greenland at the time of the crash. One man was from Belgium while the other was from the United Kingdom.

Investigators from the Transportation Safety Board will try to reach the site today to begin the probe into what went wrong.
