The Department of Language, Culture and Tourism will be offering a Tupik program in Nain.

This Tupik program will be held at the Nain Ball field this Tuesday May 30th, 2023.

Activities will include Learning the inuttitut language, Storytelling, Traditional activities and games, having traditional foods, fishing and pitsik/iKalujak making and much more.

The “Uncommon Bonds” Labrador Inuit and Moravian Missionaries will be holding an open house tomorrow in Nain.

We spoke with Dr. Mark Turner and archivist Paul Poiker from Bethlehem to find out more information about this Open House.

They held the first open house in Happy Valley-Goose Bay yesterday, Thursday May 25.

And right now, they are in Nain to hold the second open house at the Nain Illusuak Centre tomorrow Saturday Mary 27, from 1-3pm.

Then they will travel to Hopedale and Makkovik to continue off with this open house.

The Department of Language, Culture and Tourism are looking for 7 youth to attend the Youth Leadership Program.

This Youth Leadership Program will be held at the Torngat Mountains Base Camp and Research Station.

This is open to any youth between the ages of 15-30 years and the aim of the program is for youth representing from Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville, Rigolet, Upper Lake Melville and the Canadian Constituency.

Tina Tuner passed away at the age of 83, after battling a long illness.

She has been labeled the “Queen of Rock” and was known for her “larger than life” stage persona, with numerous smash hits, spanning six decades.

Some of her hits include “What’s Love Got To Do With It” and “Proud Mary” also “We Don’t Need Another Hero.”

Tina Turner went to St. John’s in 1985, as part of her North American tour, and played to a packed house at the old memorial stadium.

The funeral details for the late Tina Turner are yet to be announced.

WRDC will be hosting a Digital Skills Program in Nain from May 30 – June 8, 2023.

They are currently looking for women to take part in this program.

The province of NL reports 1 death due to COVID-19 along with 15 hospitalizations.

The victim was located at the Eastern Health Region, and was over the age of 80.

The new total number of deaths is now 345, in the province of NL, since beginning of the pandemic in March 2020.

According to an email from the Department of Health, there were 75 cases of the virus reported in that period.

There should be another update on COVID-19 by end of the week.

Gerald Asivak is the Minister of Health and Social Development and the Ordinary Member for Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

We had the privilege to speak with Asivak, with updates on what’s happening in our Inuit communities.

He announced that the daycares will now run year around, in all 5 Inuit communities of Nain, Hopedale, Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet.

The Association of Seafood Producers are focused on getting the season started in an orderly manner now that a deal has finally been reached to get the delayed crab fishery underway.

According to VOCM News, A deal was announced last Friday after a 6-week impasse on the price set by the Fish Price Setting Panel. While the price hasn’t moved from the original $1.20 set, the markets have even dropped farther, and a guarantee is in place that the price paid to harvesters won’t decline for the remainder of the fishing season.

The focus is now on getting the season started in an orderly manner. They also need to ensure that they are back in the market with marketing efforts to promote N L’s quality product, because there has been an impact according to Loder. They also need to look at ways to improve the price setting purpose.

Loder says the Premier committed to reviewing the process. If the price setting process is going to work, he believes the panel will have to be binding on both parties.

The FFAW thanks the Premier for the involvement in bringing an end to the lengthy impasse between the Union and the Processors.

The Union will be meeting in Ottawa at a later date to address the EI component.
