Labrador Interpretation Centre in NWR

The Labrador Interpretation Centre in North West River is busy this summer.

Mina Campbell-Hibbs is the Curator.

She says they will have an exhibit on the 16th of July and the name of the exhibit is called “I went to Hebron once.”

Mina Campbell Hibbs adds that a resident from Nain, Rosina Howell will go North West River and talk about her late Mother’s Josephine Kalleo’s book.

Nain DHSD Programs

The Department of Health and Social Development here in Nain is just finishing their 8 week Parenting Program facilitated by Russell and the Behavior Management Specialist, Linda Tibbo.

We contacted Elsie Russell who is the Mental Health and Addictions Worker with DHSD.

She says they will be having 15 participants graduating on Tuesday, July 9, 2019 and still has a few participants who still need to finish up but will be graduating next time.

They are planned to have a celebration on the land, have a boil up and do some fishing.

On July 17, Russell will be starting up a new 8 week Parenting Program.

Another one of her programs is the Power Hour is still running and is held every Thursdays at dinner hour at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Centre.

They walk starting at 12-12:30 followed by a healthy lunch and all is welcome.

She adds that if you attend the Power Hour for 10 sessions, you’ll get a t-shirt, and for 30 sessions, you’d get a hoodie.

Russell says it’s been running since last June and has been getting a lot of positive outcomes.

She adds that there will also be a Support Group starting at 7pm tonight at the Nigivik Centre.

Anyone ages 18 and up is welcome to attend.

And on Wednesday, July 10th, at 6pm, there will be a Support Group for all parents at the DHSD Multipurpose Room.

Language Summit Logo Designing

The Dept. of Culture, Recreation and Tourism is holding a Language Summit in November 2019.

The committee needs your help in designing a logo.

The logo should be strongly about Language/Culture as the theme is:
Speak it, Teach it, Live it! – Inuttitut UKâlalluta, Ilinniatitsiluta, InosiKalluta!

The contest will consist of a grand prize of an iPhone 7 and a runner up of a promotional item from the Department.

The deadline for submissions will be July 19, 2019 and can be sent by email, fax or through the mail to:

Bell Aliant

Many people in Nain are receiving cellular services with Bell Aliant in the community since yesterday.

Isabelle Boulet is the Media Relations with Bell Aliant.

She says right now she is currently looking into the cell services for Nain.

She will confirm this and get back to OK Radio once she gathers more information.

We will have more coverage about this story about cellular services for Nain once it becomes available.

Festival’s on the North Coast (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut communities on the North coast are now preparing for their annual summer festivities.

OKâlaKatiget Radio got in contact with the organizers in their respective communities.

In Rigolet Chelsea Shiwak is the Town clerk and she says that the Salmon festival is scheduled for August 7th to the 10th.

In Makkovik, the Trout festival is scheduled to begin on August 6th to the 10th.

In Postville, Shirley Goudie is the Town Manager and she says that the Fun in the Sun festival is scheduled for July 25th to the 27th.

In Hopedale, Belinda Denniston is the acting Recreation Director and she says she will contact the OK Radio once dates have been confirmed.

Binky Andersen from Nain is the Business Development Officer with Nunatsiavut Government.

She is planning a Committee to start up a Music Festival in Nain.

Nigivik Gardening program

The Nigivik center started a gardening program in Nain on June 28, 2019.

Pam Webb is the Food Security Coordinator for the Nigivik Center.
Right now they are re-using 6 recycled bins for their garden.
So far they have planted seeds such as Potatoes, Carrots, Peas, Beets and Lettuce.
The garden is located by the Nigivik center.

Webb says she is hoping to get more people involved, and to meet weekly to see the process of the planted vegetables.

She hopes to hold more garden programs every year.

She adds anyone can come by to gather information on how to start your own gardening at home.

Right now they had three participants in the program, and participants are able to take home what they planted.

So if anyone would like to commit into the Gardening program at the Nigivik center they can do so by calling Pam at 922-2968 or come by to the center.

Summer Rec Program

The Nain Recreation Department is very busy again this year.

We spoke with Lisa Ivany, the Recreation Director.

The Summer Program for children will begin Monday, July 8, 2019 from 8:30am-12pm and 1-4pm from Monday-Fridays.

The Summer Program will be held at the JS Community Centre this summer.

There are 2 Coordinators who will be providing the Seniors Program and the Summer Rec, and there are 12 summer students.

The Seniors Programs will be held in the afternoons.

Ivany says that there are 40 kids registered and there is some on the waiting list as well.

Lunch is not provided so parents are asked to provide a morning and afternoon snack.

The last day for Summer Recreation will be Thursday, August 15, 2019.

Ivany adds that she would like to remind the parents to pay the fee of $30 before your child starts this program.

Nain Fish Plant

The Nain fish plant is in operation since July 2nd.

Deidi Kohlmeister is the Office Supervisor for the fish plant.

She says there are eight employees who are cleaning the plant.

Kohlmeister says the char season will open, only after the clean up.

We tried to contact Makkovik fish plant, as of now people are cleaning the fish plant as well.

OK Radio will have more information next week on the Makkovik fish plant.

Eye Doctor Appointments Wanted

The Eye Team needs at least 85 people registered in order for the Eye Team to travel to Nain for Eye Appointments.

Sarah Merkuratsuk is the Sectary Receptionist for the Department of Health and Social Development for Nain.

As of right now, they don’t have enough people on the list to see the Eye Doctor.

If you need would like an appointment please call the DHSD at 922-2126.

If there are enough people to be seen, Cowan’s Optical will pick a date to come back to Nain.

New Medivac and Boat Plane

Labrador-Grenfell Health announced that beginning July 1, 2019; the authority will be improving access to health services to communities in rural coastal Labrador through enhanced air transportation.

This improvement will consist of a dedicated aircraft for routine transportation (Schedevac) and dedicated aircraft for medical emergency transportation (Medivac).

OK Radio spoke with Lela Evans, the MHA for the Torngat District on these new flight services.

She also adds more information on the “boat plane”.
