The 100 year commemoration event began in Nain on Sunday, September 22nd.

The OKâlaKatiget TV and Radio Department were invited to record this event.

The opening ceremony was held yesterday at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Center followed by Okak Descendant Interviews.

Yesterday descendants had an afternoon of Art as a Healing workshop that held a circle of storytelling and discussions.

Topics were discussed about what their concerns were and questions.

Two Job Opportunities for Youth with the OKâlaKatiget Society

The OKâlaKatiget Society has obtained funds through the First Nations and Inuit Skills Links Program to employ two youth at our office in Nain.

This is a Mentored Program which assists young people in acquiring the essential skills that will help them gain employment, function well in the workplace, and learn about job and career options.

The two positions available at OKâlaKatiget are one Television Intern and one Radio Assistant.

Applicants must be:

Youth between the ages of 18 to 30 years old; Unemployed and out of school.

The deadline to apply is September 25, 2019, and the period of employment is for 26 weeks, ending March of 2020.

The rate of pay will be $14.00 per hour plus 4% vacation pay.

Fall Sports Meet Results 2019

The Fall Sports Meet 2019 was held in Nain from September 20th to the 22nd.

The events for the Sports Meet were Table Tennis, Volleyball, Archery, Cross Country Run, and Native Games.

Julie Dicker is the coach for the Jens Haven Memorial School in Nain.

According to Dicker, these are the Fall Sports Meet results;

In Table Tennis, Nain came first, second went to Hopedale, and Rigolet placed third.

First place in Volleyball for girls was Nain, second went to Hopedale, and Rigolet placed third.

First place in Volleyball for boys went to Nain, second went to Hopedale, and Makkovik placed third.

In Archery for first place in girls went to Hopedale, second was Natuashish, and Nain placed third.

Archery for boys placed first for Nain, second went to Hopedale, and Makkovik placed third.

For the Cross Country Run girls overall placed first for Makkovik, second to Rigolet and Nain third.

The Cross Country Run for the boys placed first for Nain, second went to Makkovik, and Hopedale placed third.

The Native games for the girls first place overall went to Nain, second was Rigolet, and third was Makkovik.

Native games for the boys first place went to Nain, second to Hopedale, and third place Postville.

The Male Sportsmanship went to William Tuglavina of Hopedale.

The Female Sportsmanship went to Marin Lane of Makkovik.

The Top Male Athlete Award went to Jeremy Holwell from Nain.

The Top Female Athlete Award went to Kendra Winters from Hopedale.

And the Most Sportsmanlike team went to Postville.

The Overall points were Nain came first overall, Hopedale second, and third place was Makkovik.

7 Plex Update for Nain (Audio)

This past Sunday we aired the interview we had about the 7 plex in Nain.

Michelle Kinney is the Deputy Minister of Health and Social Development.

They began the construction on the 7 Plex this summer, similar to the one in Hopedale.

The purpose of the building is for families who are involved with CSSD, or is planning on having their children back with them with proper housing and support.

Kinney says that the 7 Plex should be completed by December of this year.

Applications will be ready by middle of October and if you are interested in applying you can go to your local family connections worker and put your name down, than they will send you an application.

The funding was received from the Federal Government to the Nunatsiavut Government under the housing initiative.

Okak Commemoration Events (Audio)

The Okak commemoration events started in Nain last evening and runs all day today.

OKalaKatiget TV and Radio were invited to record the event.

Last evening they started the events with a Family Tree workshop with Patty Way from 6-8pm at the Pulapvik.

Today the opening ceremonies were held at the JSCC followed by Okak Descendant Interviews.

At 11 there was a commemorative church service at the Nain Moravian church.

This afternoon there will be an Art as Healing workshop and storytelling circle and discussions.

To end off the event there will be a closing prayer and the Brass Band.

Fall Sports Meet 2019

The 2019 Fall Sports Meet began in Nain yesterday.

Teams and Athletes from Nain, Natuashish, Hopedale, Postville, and Rigolet is participating this year.

Yesterday evening the Opening Ceremonies went on for the Athletes.

Today marks day 2 of the Fall Sports meet, they began this morning with a Cross Country Run, after that they then moves on with archery.

The girls ran first and the results for them were as follows:

1st, 2nd, and 3rd for the girls went to Emilie, Marin, and Kalee, all from Makkovik team.

1st in the boys run went to Liam from Makkovik, and 2nd and 3rd went to Jeremy and Trevor, from Nain.

This afternoon they will hold Volley-Ball, and this evening they hold Native Games.

For the last day for Day 3 starting in the morning there will be Volley-Ball, and in the afternoon Volley-Ball will continue, than in the evening there will be the Awards Banquet.

Attention Craft Producers

A cruise ship will be visiting Nain on September 27, 2019.

The Cruise Ship will travel from Greenland on route to the Torngat Mountains National Park, to Newfoundland and to Labrador.

There will be approximately 153 visitors from off the Cruise Ship, the company is Adventure Canada.

The Jewelry Studio will be open for Craft Producers to sell their products on Friday, September 27 from 9am-1pm.

This is a great opportunity for all the Crafters to sell their products.

Makkovik Fish Plant Update

Yesterday we had an update form the Nain Fish plant and now here is an update from the Makkovik plant.

The Makkovik fish plant is still busy with Turbot.

Junior Andersen is the Production Manager for the plant.

He says 386,464lbs of Turbot has been landed to date.

Andersen adds there are 22 employees working on Turbot and 2 Turbot boats fishing.

AngijukKak Update for Nain (Audio)

The water was shut off for the town of Nain this past Wednesday for the whole day.

The Nain Inuit Community Government was busy again during this water issue situation.

Joe Dicker is the AngajukKâk of the NICG.

He says that everything is good as of right now, but he adds that there is an ongoing water boil advisory.

Dicker also speaks about the new Sub Division that has just completed.
