Jones re-elected for Labrador

Yvonne Jones is re-elected as the Member of Parliament for Labrador.

The Liberal candidate defeated NDP candidate Michelene Gray, Conservative candidate, Larry Flemming and Green candidate,Tyler Colborne.

According to Elections Canada, Jones captured 42.3% of the ballots cast.

Larry Flemming Conservative candidate garnered 31.2% of the votes.

NDP candidate Michelene Gray came third with 24.6 % of the votes cast.

Tyler Colbourne Green Candidate got the fewer votes with a percentage of 2.0%.

Of the ballets cast, Jones captured 4,821 votes.

Flemming garnered 3,548 votes.

Gray managed to bring in 2,796 votes.

And Colbourne received 224 votes.

A total of 11,389 people voted in the 2019 by-election which is down in numbers from the election in 2015 with a number of 12,373 voters.

There were 20,016 registered voters in the region.

The resulting Voter Turnout was 56.9%.

The total population of Labrador is listed by Elections Canada as 27,197.

President Lampe (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut President Johannes Lampe went to Rankin Inlet to discuss about
the Language system recently.

He says the Nunatsiavut uses small k and big K’s and Nunavut uses q’s for the writing system.

Lampe says Nunatsiavut government and Nunavut are working together on this
system.

Polling Stations

Federal Election day is upon us.

Nunatsiavummiut will join the rest of Canada to cast their vote at the polling stations today.

Nunatsiavummiut have four choices on the ballot.

Michelene Gray is the candidate for the New Democratic Party.

Larry Flemming is the candidate for the Conservative Party.

Tyler Colbourne is the candidate for the Green Party.

All are running against incumbent MP Yvonne Jones, the Liberal Candidate.

Nunatsiavummiut can head to their local polling stations to cast their vote.

The polling station in Hopedale is located at the Nanuk Center.

Residents of Nain can head to the Nain Inuit Community Government.

Postville residents can cast their vote at the Recreation Hall.

The polling station in Rigolet is located at the Strathcona House.

Residents of Makkovik can head to the Community Hall.

North West River Residents can cast their vote at the Community Centre.

The polling station in Upper Lake Melville is located at the Legion and at the Base at the Park or the Mosanic Lodge.

Polling Stations are open until 8 pm this evening.

Day Cares in Hopedale and Nain

The Nain and Hopedale Daycare workers have been training since summer.

Jenny Lyall is the Regional Childcare worker for the Nunatsiavut Government.

She says there are nine students in training.

Lyall adds starting November 6th, the students will be having evening classes to complete their courses.

Flu Clinic

Starting this week, the Department of Health and Social Development will start up their Flu Clinic in Nain.

Joann Moores is the Public Health Nurse for DHSD.

Vaccines are recommended for everyone 6 months of age and older.

It is highly recommended that pregnant women get the shot, along with young children, and also the elders.

They will begin on Wednesday, October 23rd and on Thursday, October 24th, 2019 from 9 am-12 pm and again from 1-7 pm.

On Friday, October 25th it will be from 9 am-12 pm and again from 1-4 pm at the DHSD Multipurpose Room.

And again Monday, October 28th and Tuesday, October 29th, 2019 from 9 am-12 pm and again from 1-7 pm located at the Nunatsiavut Government Board Room.

Final Prenatal Class

The Department of Health and Social Development has partnered with the Nain Family Resource Center for a Weekly Prenatal Class for expecting parents.

Joanne Moores is the Public Health Nurse with DHSD.

This began on Wednesday, September 25th, 2019.

The topics taught were on Nutrition, 9 months of Change, Labour and Delivery, and Post Partum.

The last program will be about Breastfeeding.

Due to the Flu Clinic Vaccines the program will go ahead on Wednesday, October 30th at 5 pm.
