Toys for the north update

This year marks the eighth consecutive year that the Canadian Toy Association has partnered up with the Royal Canadian Air Force, RCMP for the Toys for the North.

The “Toys for the North” have many sponsors, donors and volunteers who contribute for this special cause.

Again this year the Toys for the North will be delivering Joy for Christmas this year to all the little children in Labrador.

Confirmed by the Nain RCMP, the presents arrived to Nain yesterday.

We spoke with Lisa Ivany who is the Nain Recreation Director.

She says Sunday December 22nd, 2019 the Nain Recreation Department will be holding an “Afternoon with Santa”.

Children between the ages of zero to 12 years of age will have a chance to go and see Santa Claus himself at the Jeremias Sillitt Community Center at 2pm.

Ivany adds that Santa Claus will be handing out presents and treats to the little children, then later a Movie will be played for the children titled “Santa Claus”.

TRHA Update (Audio)

The Torngat Regional Housing Association (TRHA) is still quite busy this year with construction on the new homes for the North Coast.

William Lucy is the Coordinator with TRHA.

He says so far they have one home completed in Nain and the keys were handed over to a Liz Dicker and Elias Obed.

And he says they are hoping to hand another home over before Christmas.

Lucy says they will only do the repairs on homes in the spring of 2020.

Christmas Schedule

Christmas is just around the corner and the OK Radio would like to remind the public when we will be on for the following days:

Today, the OK Radio will be on air for regular Hours from 1pm to 4pm.

We will be on the air until December 23rd, 2019 and will be closed from December 24th – 26th but will be airing the church services.

Here are the following dates and times for the church services:

On Tuesday, Christmas Eve, December 24th, we will only be airing the Candle light service at 4pm.

On Christmas Day, Wednesday, December 25th, 2019, we’ll only be airing 10 am and 5pm church services.

On Boxing Day, Thursday, December 26th, we’ll be airing the 5pm and 7pm church services.

The next regular show will be on December 27th.

On Children’s Day, December 28th, we will only be airing the 5pm Closing Service.

On Monday, December 30th, 2019, the OK Radio will only be on the air from 1-3 pm, and will be closing again to ring in the New Year.

On Tuesday, December 31st, the OK Radio will air the New Year’s Eve Memorabilia at 7pm.

Wednesday, January 1st, 2020, New Year’s Day, we’ll be airing the 10am and 5pm church services.

Monday, January 6th, on Old Christmas Day, the OK Radio will air the 10am and 5pm church services.

We would also like to notify the public that we are now accepting Christmas Greetings.

OK Radio would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Santa Claus on air

Children from the Labrador coast will have a chance to speak to Santa Claus during our program.

Santa Claus will be on the OKâlaKatiget Society Radio tomorrow, December 19th, 2019 from 2 to 4 pm.

Children ages 12 years and under will be able to call Santa.

Children in town who wish to talk to Santa with their Wish List can call our station at 922-2955.

For children out of town, you can call our toll free number at 1-855-922-2955.

Santa and his Elves are very busy at this time of the year, so, children get your Wish List ready to tell Santa what you want for Christmas.

Just a reminder to parents or guardians; children are asked to keep it short as possible, so that other children get a chance to talk to Santa.

Once again, Santa will be on OKâlaKatiget Radio tomorrow, December 19th, from 2-4 pm.

TaKuaKautik Toys Drive

The TaKuaKautik is looking for donations of new toys.

These toys will be given away at our next distribution to the food bank clients.

Brenda Jararuse is the Chair for the TaKuaKautik, Food Bank here in Nain.

She says any new toy or gently used toy donations would be greatly appreciated and will sure make a child in need happy on Christmas.

Please feel free to reach out to one of our committee members if you have something you would like to donate.

Jararuse is also asking everyone to please return your bags to the Nigivik ASAP where as of now; they have no bags to bag for the next give away.

Everyone has a role to play in our food bank, so, please remember to bring bags back ASAP or they won’t be able to give out food.

Coastal Food Banks

The Food Banks are open along the North coast of Labrador.

The OK Society contacted the Inuit Community Government’s to see what they have to offer.

In Postville, the food bank is located at the town office.

They accept non-perishable food and food that fit onto the shelves.

If anyone that is not able to drop off the donation, you can call Shirley Goudie.

The Food Bank in Hopedale is located at the Hopedale Inuit Community Government office and is accepting any food.

If you can’t drop off the food, you can call the council office at 933-3864.

In Nain, the TaKuaKautik is also located at the town office.

They accept turkeys or geese, monetary donations, and toys for their Christmas Toy Drive.

To make a request for orders, you can fill a form with your name in the blue boxes at the Nunatsiavut Government office, clinic, the Family Connections Staff, or the Post Office here in Nain.

If you are unable to drop off your donations, you can call Brenda Jararuse at 922-2942 or email the TakuaKautik at takuakautik@gmail.com.

The Community of Makkovik doesn’t have a food bank but is doing a Food Hamper this year.

In Rigolet, they have their food bank is also at the ICG town office.

They accept donations of mostly non-perishable foods.

They are open once a week every Thursdays from 1-3pm, and if you cannot drop off the item, you can call Inez Shiwak at home or at the office.

Coastal Christmas hampers/vouchers

Every year, communities on the north coast help their community members before the Christmas Holidays.

Food hampers or Christmas food Vouchers are handed out before Christmas.

This is a great way to spread the Christmas spirit and to help those in need.

They are given to low income families, seniors, and to single parents.

We contacted each community to find out what they are doing this year to help families in need for this year.

In Nain, we spoke with Team Leader, Edna Winters with the Nain DHSD.

She says they are giving out Food Vouchers and are still in the process of receiving money donations from different organizations.

The Christmas vouchers can only be used at the Franks store.

In Hopedale, the ICG will be handing out their vouchers on Monday, December 23rd, 2019.

In Rigolet we spoke with Reverend Sarah Baikie.

She says the Rigolet church will be giving out Christmas vouchers this year and should be handed out sometime soon.

Baikie says whoever is in need of a voucher this year can call to put their name forward.

And in Postville, we spoke with Glenda Sheppard who is the Assistant Town clerk.

She says the town office will be handing out various donations this week that will be allocated to seniors, low income families, and each donation amount will vary.

In Makkovik, we spoke with Carol Gear to find out what their community will be doing this year for Christmas.

She says the Pantry Wood Box Committee will be handing out food hampers this year for residence in Makkovik.

And this year, the NG is contacting homes for seniors and low income families because each home is different, and the Pantry Wood Box committee will be handing out the donations to those who need help this year.

The HVGB DHSD will be handing out a Christmas hamper to one family this year.

We spoke with Kelly Jacobs who is the Community Health Worker.

She says each year, they sponsor a low income beneficiary family and who has a low income in their community.

The DHSD staff has been collecting food items since November and December to hand out this Christmas donation to the family.

Right now, they currently have 3 big boxes of food and a big box of presents that will be delivered to the family on Friday, December 20th, 2019.

The HVGB DHSD has been doing this for the past 10 years to help a family in need during the holidays.

Wolverine Volleyball Tournament

There will be a volleyball tournament coming up soon in Makkovik after Christmas.

Paul Andersen is the Recreation Director for Makkovik.

He says this event will be the Wolverine Shield Men’s and Women’s volleyball tournament for ages 13 years and older.

The administration fee is $15 per player and must be at least 5 players per team and maximum of 7 players.

Andersen says the tournament will take place at the J.C. Erhardt Memorial School Gym on December 28th and 29th, 2019.

The deadline to register is on Christmas Day, December 25th.

Air Borealis Moose Meat

The Air Borealis have been busy sending moose meat out to the coastal communities.

The OK Society once again has contacted the ICG’s to see if they received their moose meat.

As of now, Nain, Postville, Makkovik, and Rigolet have received their moose meat.

For the exception of Hopedale, they haven’t yet received their moose meat.
