Air Borealis (Audio)

The Air Borealis management team traveled to the North Coast communities in December and January of this month.

The purpose of their trips was to hold their annual visits for customers and to provide feedback and information regarding topics within the business of Air Borealis.

We spoke with Travis Barbour who is the Director for Air Borealis.

He says they did not have a chance to travel in December due to weather; they are traveling to the remainder of the communities from January 13th to the 17th.

Barbour says the Air Borealis annual visits give them the opportunity to provide an update for their customers.

He says these trips were really rewarding to speak and talk to their customers.

Goose Bay and Nain Community Freezer

Yesterday OKâlaKatiget contacted some of the coastal community freezers to see what they have to offer in their community freezers.

In Happy Goose Bay as of tomorrow February 1st, 2020, they will have char, shrimp, red berries, turnip, potatoes, cabbage and carrots.

In Nain they have moose and char to offer in their community freezer.

Inuktitut Speak-Off Postponed

The Inuktitut Speak-Off that was supposed to be held in Nain is postponed until next month.

Christine Nochasak is the Inuk Program Specialist.

She says the Inuktitut Speak-Off was postponed because some of the students couldn’t make it and she did not want to leave anyone out.

Nochasak adds that the Inuktitut speak-off will go ahead on February 4th, 2020.

Next Date for the Nunatsiavut Government Charter

The Nunatsiavut Government charters are provided for all Nunatsiavut Beneficiaries.

The next charter will be available on March 2nd, 2020, and the next assembly sitting will be held in June, 2020.

Charter flights from your community to another community will only cost $40 and flights from your community to Happy Valley-Goose Bay will cost $60.

The NG Charters can seat up to 15 passengers on the flight.

Illusuak Gift Shop (Audio)

The Illusuak is in process of opening a Gift Shop here in Nain.

Sarah Leo is the Chief Operating Officer of the Nunatsiavut Group of Company.

She says the Illusuak is open with limited hours and serves coffee and different kinds of tea.

Leo also speaks about how the Gift Shop will come about when it opens.

Nunatsiavut Government Tenders for Home Repairs 2020

The Nunatsiavut Government intends to provide a home repair program to provide general home repairs to Labrador Inuit residents in the 5 Inuit Communities of Nunatsiavut.

Tenders are to be received no later than 4 pm on February 11th, 2020 at the Nunatsiavut Government offices in Rigolet, Nunatsiavut.

Summary of Scope of Work: The Nunatsiavut Government has completed assessments of the homes which have applied for repairs to determine the scope of work required.

In total, 36 homes have been approved for repairs across the 5 Inuit Communities. Bidders may submit a tender for the work for all of the communities collectively, or for select communities, however bids for select communities must include the work all of the homes identified in a community.

Verification of site dimensions and conditions will be the responsibility of bidders. Bidders must be familiar with general construction methods and all applicable building codes.

Before submitting tenders, interested proponents are required to obtain the full detailed scope of work, instructions and requirements for tenders, and any further information on the project from the Nunatsiavut Government offices in Rigolet:

Tenders may be submitted by email or mail and must be clearly marked “CONSTRUCTION SERVICES – NUNATSIAVUT HOME REPAIR PROGRAM 2019” The lowest-cost or any proposal may not necessarily be accepted and the Nunatsiavut Government reserves the right to cancel this RFP.

Proposals will be evaluated on the principles of value for money, which include an evaluation of the Inuit Content Factor pursuant to the Procurement Act.

Cain’s Quest Update

Just a few months away for the 2020 Cains Quest Snowmobile Endurance race to begin in Labrador.

On March 7th, 2020, teams from across the world will be competing.

We spoke with Sarah Hensgens who is with the administration for Cain’s quest racing company.

Hensgens says that the teams are now full for the race of 2020, with 2 full Female teams

The teams consist of four countries that will be participating, with Switzerland being the new addition along with Canada, Finland and United States.

The route for the race will be going the opposite way of the original race.

This year the race will begin on March 4th with the starting line at Labrador City.

If you know anyone who will be participating in the race, be sure to say good luck to them in the race.

Coastal Community Freezers

The OKâlaKatiget Society radio department contacted all the north coast communities to see what they have to offer in their community freezers.

In Hopedale, they have moose meat to offer in their community freezer.

In Rigolet, there’s moose meat, bake apples, red berries, and corn cod.

In Postville, they have cod fish, moose meat and char to offer in their community freezer.

The OK Society will have more information from the Nain and Happy Valley-Goose Bay community freezers once it becomes available.

15th Annual Carl Sheppard Memorial Tournament

The 15th Annual Carl Sheppard Memorial tournament dates have changed due to the closeness of dates to the Cain’s Quest.

We spoke with Jacqueline Harris who is the Acting Recreation Director for the Postville Inuit Community Government.

She says the tournament has been changed from March 13th to February 21st and 22nd, 2020.

The teams must consist of 9 players, with 4 men and 4 women with the goalie with $10 fee to register.

The tournament will take place at the B.L. Morrison School gym starting at 6 pm.

The deadline to register is on February 19th, 2020.

Youth Outing to Anaktalik

The Nain Youth Outreach Worker would like to see more land based programs for youth.

We spoke with Kim Oliver who is the Youth Outreach Worker with DHSD.

She says some youth will get a chance to go out on the land tomorrow, Friday, January 31st, 2020.

There will be a total of 6 youth going to the outing along with Oliver, Susan Saksagiak and David Dicker Jr. as their guides.

Oliver says that they will be doing some fishing, have a small boil-up and get some wood for an elder.

They will then decide on who need wood heat the most.
