D&M guest house in HVGB

Accommodations are available for travelers going through Happy Valley-Goose Bay.

Dina (Obed) Crane is living in Goose Bay but is originally from Nain.

She says they have a two bedroom place called D&M Guest House for both patients and travelers who need a place to stay.

Obed says that she has furniture and house hold items such as washer, dryer, phone, internet and cable.

Her rooms consist of a double and a twin bed in one room, and a bunk bed and a twin bed in the other with TV and cable in each room.

She also says they also provide the food if needed.

Those who are traveling for medical appointments are covered by the Nunatsiavut Government, and paying customers on a trip, pay $50 a night.

They have been very busy lately where it is newly renovated, and people come and go.

Obed adds that people find it very comfortable with their own space.

Hopedale Land Base Program (Audio)

The Hopedale DHSD will be holding a land based program sometime in March.

Beverly Hunter is the Elder’s Coordinator in Hopedale.

She says the last time they held a land based program outside of Hopedale was a five day language camp.

They had some senior’s; adults and an Inuttitut teacher participate last summer.

Nain Recreation Dept. trial on Bingo dates

The Nain Recreation Department would like to inform residence of Nain that the Recreation bingo dates were changed on a temporarily basis.

Lisa Ivany is the Recreation Director for the Nain Inuit Community Government.

She says this is a trial period, where they are still trying to figure out what exact dates to hold bingos.

The Nain Recreation Bingos were held on Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

And the dates were moved to Tuesday and Saturdays for now.

Ivany says there is no change to the Nain Fire Brigade bingo, which is held every Friday.

She adds that the Recreation hold bingo’s to help fundraise for certain activities within the Recreation Department.

This also includes money donations towards youth activities, such as tournaments and trips.

Ivany adds that the Nain Recreation Department are still selling tickets on a brand new 900 Ace Skandic Wide track snowmobile, tickets are sold for $20, and the draw will take place this month on February 20th, 2020.

The deadline to purchase tickets on this snowmobile will be on February 20, at 6pm.

People from out of town can also purchase tickets, and if you win, you will be responsible to get the snowmobile to your community.

1,500 tickets are available to purchase, and so far they have sold 400 tickets.

2020 Winter Sports Meet

The 2020 Winter Sports Meet is being held in Postville this year.

The sports meet began yesterday, February 6th and will end tomorrow night.

Both male and female did Cross Country Skiing which started at 9am this morning.

This was followed by Snow shoe races at 11:30am to 12pm after meeting in front of the school.

The Ball hockey and soccer games starts at 1pm at the gym until 5pm.

They will then participate in the native games in the school gym from 6:30 to finish at 9pm.

The Labrathon will be starting on Saturday at 10am, and from 12:30 to 4:30, they will begin with soccer at the Community Recreation Centre.

The closing banquet will be open to the public and will start at 6:30pm, presentation of awards.

Pauktutiit Women of Canada (Audio)

The Pauktuutit Women of Canada plans to be very busy in the upcoming year.

Rebecca Kudloo is the President for Pauktuutit.

She says that a research was done on Policing in Inuit Nunangat.

Kudloo adds they will have their Annual General Meeting end of this month, to see what kind of projects they will be doing for this year.

Bylaw From the NICG and Nain RCMP

The Nain Inuit Community Government and the Nain RCMP detachment are working together to inform residence about silencers not permitted within town limits.

We spoke with Sergeant Ed Nugent with the Nain RCMP.

He says this bylaw was put in place from the Nain Inuit Community Government.

This bylaw states that silencers are not permitted in town limits and anyone using a silencer on their snowmobile within town limits can get a fine.

We also spoke with our AngajukKâk Joe Dicker about this concern.

He says this bylaw has been in place now for many years.

And the NICG and Nain RCMP have been receiving complaints from the community about this issue.

If you are caught using a silencer in town, you will get a convicted fine of $500.

Dicker adds that the NICG office has also been getting calls and complaints about this bylaw.

A written letter will be mailed from the NICG office as a warning.

The NICG office will be keeping paper trail of each incidence.

If you have any concerns about this bylaw, you can call the Town Office at 922-2842 if you don’t get a response back, then you can contact the Nain RCMP detachment at 922-2862.

Polar Bear Licences Available

Notice to the Nunatsiavut beneficiaries, the Polar Bear season is now open for 2020.

Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement are advised that the 2020 Polar Bear licences for the Labrador Inuit settlement Area will be issued under a draw system.

Todd Broomfield is the Director of Renewable Resources for Nunatsiavut government.

He says they have twelve polar bear licences available.

Broomfield adds the closing season is June 30th, 2020 or when the twelve polar bear are harvested.

Changes to Medication Dispensing

The Standards of Practice as set out by the Newfoundland and Labrador Pharmacy Board and the Association of Registered Nurses of NL, requires Labrador Grenfell Health to change the way medications are dispensed at its community clinics.

As a result, the community clinics in Postville, Makkovik and Rigolet will no longer be dispensing long-term prescriptions as of Monday, March 3rd, 2020. This change in dispensing services has previously occurred in Nain and Hopedale.

This change promotes and protects the rights and responsibilities of clients and follows regularly standards and best practices for the dispensing of medication.

Clients are responsible to:
-Contact their community clinic to review active prescriptions.
-Make an appointment at the clinic one month before prescriptions need to be renewed.( This information can be found on the label of current medication.)
-Choose a community pharmacy to transfer any active prescriptions from the clinic. (Labrador Grenfell Health can fax new prescriptions to the community pharmacy chosen by clients, if required.)
-Discuss medication pick-up, delivery and arrange payment with the community pharmacy. (Only medication filled at pharmacies in Happy Valley- Goose Bay maybe picked up at the community clinic in your area.)

Labrador Grenfell Health will continue to have a small supply of medications in case they are required by clients on short notice. The clinic will continue to provide acute-care medications.

Gracie Flowers Memorial Minor Ice Hockey Tournament

The 4th Annual Grace Jararuse Flowers Minor Ice Hockey fun tournament Dates has been changed and will be March 12th-15th.

Divisions consist of Atom, Peewee, Female, Bantam and Midget.

12 and Under Division
Atom/Peewee
Female 13-18
Women 19 and up.

Men Division
13-17) years of age (Bantam/Midget)
Adult 18 years old and up

The registration fee per player for the students is $20 and for adults and youths not in school is $30.

Come out to the tournament and celebrate to honor Gracie’s memory and have fun at the tournament.

Carl Sheppard Tournament

The 15th Annual Carl Sheppard Memorial Ball Hockey Tournament has been changed to March.

Jacqueline Harris is the Acting Recreation Director for the Postville Inuit Community Government.

The tournament has been changed to March 20th to March 21st, 2020 at the B.L. Morrison School Gym.

The registration fee to apply is $10 a player, must be 14 years and older and the teams must consist of 4 men, 4 women maximum plus the goalie.

You must submit your teams by March 18th, 2020.
