COVID-19 Update

The number of people hospitalized in Newfoundland and Labrador for COVID-19 is the fewest it has been in a month, as the province marked another day with no new reported cases of the virus.

Tuesday is the ninth day in the past 11 with no cases found.

The province’s total caseload stands at 258, with 222 having recovered from the virus.

Four people are hospitalized — the fewest since the same number of hospitalizations on March 28 — with two in intensive care.

As of Tuesday’s daily briefing, 7,955 people have been tested — 333 since Monday’s briefing.

Coastal Community Freezers (Audio)

The OK Radio contacted the coastal Inuit Community Governments to see what wild food they have in their community freezers to deliver to their residents.

The OKâlaKatiget contacted the communities of Nain, Hopedale, Makkovik, Postville and Rigolet to see what they have to offer.

Update on Wage Subsidy for Employers

Applications are open for the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy starting today, Monday, April 27th, 2020.

As a Canadian employer whose business has been affected by COVID-19, you may be eligible for a subsidy of 75% of employee wages for up to 12 weeks, retroactive from March 15th, 2020, to June 6th, 2020.

This wage subsidy will enable you to re-hire workers previously laid off as a result of COVID-19, help prevent further job losses, and better position you to resume normal operations following the crisis.

Most businesses may apply using My Business Account if you represent a business, you may apply using Represent a Client Alternatively, you may apply using a separate online application form (available April 27).

The Nunatsiavut Government has been very busy with programs since the start of the COVID-19.

Tyler Edmunds is the First Minister of the Nunatsiavut Government.

He says that the Home Heating Subsidy Program and the Food Supplement Program are being targeted towards individuals, fixed income towards individuals on a lower income.

Edmunds also says it’s been a process to get these programs implemented.

Natuashish Booze Bust

Natuashish RCMP executes search warrant on residence and seizes quantity of alcohol.

On April 25th, 2020, Natuashish RCMP executed a search warrant at a residence on Katshinask Street and seized a quantity of alcohol.

Shortly before 10:00 a.m., police received information that someone was selling alcohol from the home.

Officers observed two women coming out of the residence with alcohol.

They were arrested under the Federal Indian Act for being intoxicated on a dry reserve and were found in possession of one full bottle and two opened bottles of alcohol.

They were later released without charges.

Officers obtained a search warrant, entered the residence and arrested a man and a woman inside the home.

Eight full bottles and two partial bottles of Royal Reserve were located and seized.

The man was released without charge. The 21-year-old woman, who was under the influence of alcohol, was found in breach of a court order by consuming and possessing alcohol.

She was released from custody and is set to attend court at a later date.

The investigation is continuing.

Nain House Fire

The Nain RCMP responded to a call on Saturday, April 25th, 2020 at approximately 5:02 pm about a house fire.

We spoke with Sergeant Nugent with the Nain RCMP detachment.

He says they responded to phone call about a local house fire, location was on Pinguavik Street.

Nugent says several people in the home left the scene, unharmed.

The house fire is still under investigation.

The Nain Inuit Community Freezer Update

The Nain Community Freezer will be taking the following measures to ensure residents have access to traditional wild food during the COVID-19 pandemic:

The Community Freezer is closed to the public at this time.

They have started a delivery system. If you would like to receive meat from the Community Freezer:

Please call 922-2380 on Monday or Tuesday morning from 8:30am-12pm. Staff will take your name and address to have meat delivered to your house on Thursday’s, weather permitting, Friday as a backup day.

Staff will drop off meat on your doorstep during the day and we ask that someone be home to receive it.

If there are harvesters that would like to hunt for the Community Freezer, please call 922-2380 on Monday or Tuesday morning or contact Research Center staff, Liz Pijogge or Carla Pamak to arrange a time to drop off meat.

The health and well-being of the community is our top priority and we will do our best to make sure community members have access to wild food.

Funerals, Viewings, and Wakes Prohibited (Audio)

The Nunatsiavut Government wishes to remind Beneficiaries of the Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement that under the Provincial Public Health (COVID-19) Protection Order issued March 31, public funerals, visitations and wakes are prohibited, and burials are restricted to no more than five people (including the officiant).

All those attending burials must remain at least two metres (six feet) apart at all times. No more than five people are allowed to dig the grave, and social distancing protocols must be followed. Pallbearers (up to four) are required to place the deceased at gravesites and vacate the area prior to burial. Following graveside services, the five participants (which includes the officiant) must vacate the area so that the body can be buried.

COVID-19 Update

Yesterday, Sunday, April 26, Newfoundland and Labrador had one new confirmed case of COVID-19.

The one new confirmed case is in the Eastern Health region.

This brings the total number of confirmed cases in the province to 258.

The regional breakdown of the 258 cases is as follows:

• Eastern Health – 240
• Central Health – 8
• Labrador-Grenfell Health – 6
• Western Health – 4

Fifty-two per cent of cases are female and forty-eight per cent are male.

Five people are in hospital due to the virus. Of these patients, two are in intensive care.

Two hundred and nineteen people have recovered.

There have been three deaths from COVID-19.

To date, 7,477 people have been tested.
